Norway's royal family is usually free of scandal, but that has changed with Crown Prince Haakon's stepson, Marius Borg Hoiby, 27, being accused of "physically attacking a woman in her home and threatening to set her clothes on fire."

This led a former girlfriend of Hoiby's, Juliane Snekkestad, to take to her Instagram and reveal: "I now no longer choose to remain silent... This has happened before. And this must be stopped now."

Marius Hoiby had only recently entered into a relationship with Rebecca Helberg Arntsen.

Hoiby is the only child of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous marriage before she wed the future Scandinavian monarch in a lavish ceremony in Oslo back in 2001. Norway's long-serving monarch, King Harald V, and his consort, Queen Sonja, were said to initially be against Haakon's choice of bride due to her "checkered past," but the future queen went on to win the heart of the nation.

Hoiby grew up alongside his mom and stepdad along with their two children, Princess Ingrid, second in line to the Norwegian throne, and Prince Sverre Magnus. Until now, the royal stepchild has frequently been praised for occasionally stepping in to assist his mom and future queen with some of her public duties.

Hoiby spent 30 hours in jail after the incident and was arrested without incident. Local media indicated that when officers arrived at the scene, they found the apartment partially damaged. As a result, the charges against Hoiby have been extended to include property damage in addition to the initial allegations.

The uproar over the allegations inevitably led to discussions of the royal rebel's past, to which a former partner helped fill in the gaps.

Snekkestad added: "The last few days have been strange and painful. In the last week, I have received a lot of phone calls; messages... regarding my ex's order. First, I would like to send warm thoughts to those affected by the case. Although [my] closest family and friends have known about this, I now no longer choose to remain silent. Because I actually can't keep silent any longer."

She then pointedly stated: "And to answer the clues: Yes. I have previously been subjected to psychological and physical violence by the person in question. Where the psychological violence was most brutal for me. I'm not sharing this because I want pity... Or to put the focus on me... This has happened before. And this must be stopped now."
