'Suits' Writer Reveals The One Word The Palace Banned Meghan Markle From Saying On The Show

Meghan Markle as Rachel Zane in the hit legal drama 'Suits'.
Meghan Markle was beloved by audiences for her role as Rachel Zane in Suits. The hit legal drama catapulted her from a small-town girl to an A-list star. However, after news of her relationship with Prince Harry broke, she had to make several accommodations to be accepted into the royal fold. Suits writer and creator, Aaron Korsh, revealed that the Palace banned her from saying ‘poppycock’ on the show.
Korsh shared that her life was not all rainbows and sunshine on the set. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, he said, “[The royal family] weighed in on some stuff. Not many things, by the way...it was a little irritating.” He added that they banned her from saying one word for an episode. “They didn't want to put the word 'poppycock' in her mouth. I presume because they didn't want people cutting things together of her saying 'c***'. So we had to change it to 'bulls***.” Markle left her career as an actress after her fairytale wedding to Prince Harry in 2018. Interestingly, her role in Suits also ended with an ‘on-screen’ wedding.
The statements made by Korsh were also echoed by royal author Tom Bower in his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors. Bower spilled in addition to script restrictions, the Palace also banned Markle from clicking pictures of her ‘on-screen’ wedding dress. According to The Mirror, he wrote, “Fearing the worst, from bitter experience, the Palace stepped in to control Meghan’s life…The most important demand concerned Meghan’s last scene at her ‘wedding’ to Mike. No photographs, the Palace ordered, were to be shot of Meghan wearing a wedding dress. Between filming, she was always to wear a jacket over the dress.” The author added that Markle's Suits script was allegedly forwarded from her agent to the Kensington Palace for approval.
Markle's on-screen troubles on Suits were discussed by Prince Harry in his bombshell memoir, Spare. Harry revealed the frustration of the show's writers as the royal family constantly interfered. As reported by the Daily Express, he wrote, “The show writers were frustrated because they were often advised by the Palace comms team to change lines of dialogue, what her character would do, how she would act.” Markle’s final scene featured her marrying her love interest, Mike Ross, played by Patrick J. Adams. It aired a year later in the weeks leading up to her royal wedding with Harry.
Prince Harry’s memoir also revealed a sweet thing about his wife’s role in Suits. In his book, he mentioned that his brother, Prince William, and sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, were huge fans of the series. During a dinner, he let it out that he was dating the lead actress from the hit show. William was allegedly flabbergasted when he learned his younger brother was dating his favorite actress.
