King Charles III, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February last year, was recently hospitalized last week after experiencing temporary side effects from his treatment. Amongst the outpouring of well-wishes from royal fans, a video of his visit to Samoa with Queen Consort Camilla from October 2024 also went viral as netizens spotted worrying signs—his swollen red hands and him unable to stay awake.
According to Reuters, during Charles and Camilla's Samoa visit, he was offered the title of High Chief when he attended a summit of Commonwealth nations. As a part of their visit, the couple also participated in traditional Samoan ceremonies. A clip from the event showed the King dozing off, looking haggard, while Camilla whispered to him from behind her folding fan, possibly waking him.
As a video of the same made its rounds on X (formerly Twitter), a royal watcher commented, “What is going on with his hands? They are bright red and swollen.” Another netizen opined, “At this stage in their lives, the only places they should be touring are care homes, not countries. Old boy is sleepy.” In a similar vein, a fan chimed, “They both look ill. When being treated for cancer, one should be shielded from stress as well as germs from various sources.” Another reasoned, “It's sweltering hot. They are at a tedious required appearance, jetlagged, older, and he is still under the effects of cancer treatment.”
Charles's tired appearance wasn't the only thing that caught the attention of royal watchers. They also criticized Camilla for whispering behind her fan at a public event. A person slammed, “Why is she whispering behind the fan. She is an embarrassment.” Another chimed, “When you whisper behind a fan, you leave the impression that you're saying something negative about the people around you.” Meanwhile, a netizen suggested she was saying, “‘Oi Chaz [Charles], I fink I just dropped one.’"
As per The Independent, Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer during an examination for an enlarged prostate. Buckingham Palace recently released a statement with an update on his health. The statement read, "Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, the King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in the hospital. His Majesty's afternoon engagements were, therefore, postponed." The Palace also issued an apology for the cancellation. According to The Sun, upon hearing the news, Princess Anne rushed to her brother's side at Clarence House in London. She also spent the night at his private home at The London Clinic the day prior.
