After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their roles as senior royals, their bond with Queen Elizabeth reportedly soured. The Duke and Duchess have fought fiercely for royal security, demanding protection for their family. In a surprising twist, newly unearthed court documents reveal that the Queen backed their plea. Her letters show that she supported their need for security as former senior royals.
As reported by The Mirror, the Queen’s letter was handed down in a judgment for a libel case that Harry brought against a major news publisher. The letter, which was written by the late monarch's private secretary, Sir Edward Young, read, “You will understand well that ensuring that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain safe is of paramount importance to Her Majesty and her family. Given the Duke's public profile by virtue of being born into the royal family, his military service, the Duchess's own independent profile, and the well-documented history of targeting of the Sussex family by extremists, it is imperative that the family continues to be provided with effective security.”
The unearthed letter showed that Her Majesty deeply cared about Harry and Markle despite their departure from the UK. Young’s letter also noted that Her Majesty was well aware that RAVEC would make their final decision on their security independently. As per reports, the Prince is granted taxpayer-funded police security on a ‘case-by-case’ basis. This means that when he returns to his home country, he’ll only receive it if the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) finds it necessary.
In February 2024, Harry lost his fight with the British government over the stripping back of his taxpayer-funded security protection. In an interview for the ITV1 documentary, Tabloids On Trial, he opened up about his decision not to return to the UK. He told ITVX, “Whether it's a knife or acid, these are things that are genuine concerns for me. It's one of the reasons why I won't bring my wife back to this country.” He also revealed that his legal battles were the main cause of a rift with his family members. He explained, “I have made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done; it would be nice if we did it as a family.”
Harry’s fear of returning to the UK was also echoed by former royal butler Grant Harrold. Speaking to The Mirror, Harrold said, “I think Harry's biggest concern about returning is anyone trying to attack him or his family because there is a love-hate relationship between him and the British public.” The Prince has since appealed his case, which is set to be heard in London on April 8-9, 2025.
