Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 8, 2022. Her remarkable 70-year reign made her the longest-serving monarch in British history. After her death, her former daughter-in-law, Sarah Ferguson, revealed the Queen’s heartwarming advice that has stayed with her. Ferguson credited the late monarch for teaching her never to doubt her self-worth and to be herself.

Ferguson and Queen Elizabeth knew each other long before her marriage to Prince Andrew. In an interview with the Sunday Times, the Duchess of York opened up about the heartbreaking last advice the Queen gave her. She told the outlet, “I was addicted to food. The fact that I could eat my emotions was the only thing that saved my life. I got lost, probably trying to be like Diana.” She added, “But the Queen never lost me. The best advice she gave me was the last thing she said to me. ‘Sarah, remember that yourself is good enough.’ It makes me cry.” Ferguson, who was nicknamed ‘The Duchess of Pork’ by the British Press, once faced relentless body shaming. She credits Queen Elizabeth for helping her realize her self-worth and find her confidence as she navigated the public eye.

In the same interview, Ferguson revealed that when her mother left to start a new life with her second husband, the late monarch became a ‘mother’ figure to her. “The Queen was much more my mother than my mother was. I called her Mumma. She never let me down, even if I let her down,” she told the outlet. Despite her divorce from Prince Andrew, she remained close to Her Majesty until her death. She fondly remembers walking her corgi dogs with her during the pandemic. “I had many Covid jabs so I could walk the dogs with her. She had little brown walking shoes. Now I have the corgis. They’re phenomenal,” she shared.

Queen Elizabeth’s final hours at the Balmoral Castle showed the late monarch’s commitment to her royal duties. Royal biographer Robert Hardman revealed her last documented diary entry in his book, Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story. As reported by the Telegraph, he wrote in his book, “It could have been describing another normal working day starting in the usual way– 'Edward came to see me'– as she noted the arrangements which her private secretary, Sir Edward Young, had made for the swearing-in of the new ministers of the Truss administration.” Just two days before her death, the Queen met with the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, for a meeting.

According to Hardman’s book, the Queen’s health deteriorated on the morning of September 7th. The next morning, she was reportedly starting to slip in and out of consciousness, which kept the Palace on high alert. According to a memo recorded by her private secretary, she passed away at 3:25 BST in her sleep due to old age. Her funeral was held at Westminster Abbey in London on September 19, 2022.
