Stay in Your Lane, Fergie: Prince Andrew's Ex-Wife Ditches Planned Australia Visit 'With Regret' as King Charles Launches Tour Down Under
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has canceled her scheduled visit to Perth, Australia. This decision follows the announcement of King Charles III and Queen Camilla's upcoming royal tour to Australia in October 2024, which will be His Majesty's first visit as the Land Down Under's monarch.
Ferguson had planned to attend the inaugural Festival of Fiction in Perth, a literary event where she was set to headline alongside other prominent authors. However, she opted to cancel her appearance to avoid overshadowing the royal tour.
The official royal tour, coinciding with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, is significant as it reflects the monarch's efforts to connect with the Commonwealth nations despite his ongoing health challenges. The royal couple's itinerary includes visits to key locations in Australia, although the specifics are yet to be fully confirmed.
This trip will be their first return to the nation since 2018 when they attended the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast as the late Queen Elizabeth II's official representatives.
Ferguson's cancelation is seen as a gesture of respect and support for the royal family, ensuring the focus remains on the King's visit. Her involvement in the Festival of Fiction was highly anticipated, as she was set to promote her latest book and participate in various literary discussions. Despite the cancer survivor's absence, the event will continue with other notable authors such as Melina Marchetta and Tony Birch, promising a vibrant celebration of literature.
This decision underscores the ongoing dynamics within the British royal family and their engagements with the Commonwealth, as reports were reflecting a lack of attention for the gathering of nations since His Majesty's accession to the throne nearly two years ago. It highlights Ferguson's support for King Charles and Queen Camilla's roles and the significance of maintaining a united front during official tours.
"With regret, Sarah, Duchess of York, has decided to withdraw from the Festival of Fiction, so as not to distract or detract in any way from the tour of Australia by His Majesty the King, which has recently been announced," a statement read.
The statement continued: "Due to exceptional demand, she will be returning to Perth on November 1 at 6:30 PM for a special event at Joondalup Resort and apologizes to anyone who is inconvenienced by the change of date."
This news comes amid the ongoing feud between Fergie's ex-husband, Prince Andrew, and his older brother, the King, over the former's home, Royal Lodge. The monarch is said to still want the Duke of York out of the opulent mansion, as he sees both his and Ferguson's residence there as a "waste."
