Royal Chef Reveals Princess Diana Refused to Date Tom Cruise For One Major Reason: "He's Too..."

Princess Diana meets actors Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman at the premiere of 'Far and Away'.
Princess Diana was reportedly quite fascinated with Tom Cruise when they first met at the premiere of Far and Away. However, one major reason stopped her from considering Cruise romantically. At 5'10", she couldn’t overlook the actor's mere 5'7" height, squashing any chance of romance.
The revelation came when Darren McGrady, Diana’s former chef, paid tribute to the late Princess in a YouTube video on what would’ve been her 60th birthday. McGrady shared a humorous anecdote—one day over breakfast, Diana allegedly revealed that she had received an invitation to watch the making of Mission Impossible at Pinewood Studios in London. She was excited to take her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, for the screening.
McGrady recalls in his video, “I remember saying, ‘I’m not sure about the boys, your Royal Highness, but if you get to meet Tom Cruise…” As the cheeky chef teased the world’s most beautiful woman with one of the sexiest man alive, Diana responded with a chuckle, “Darren, I’ll crack the funnies.” After the screening, the Princess reportedly returned home full of praise for the film and how much her sons enjoyed it. However, she made it clear that there was no hope for her and Cruise. “She came in, picked up some fruit, walked out, and didn't say anything. As she was leaving, she casually said, ‘He’s another one off the list. He’s too short!” McGrady shared with a smile.
Before the screening of Mission Impossible, Diana was already well acquainted with the actor. As per biographer, Judy Wade, in Diana: The Intimate Portrait, the Princess found him ‘extremely fanciable’ when they first met in 1992 at the London premiere of Far and Away. Cruise, who had attended the event with his then-wife Nicole Kidman, had charmed Diana with his wit and charisma. This, Wade claimed, created tension between Cruise and Kidman. She said, “That explains why Nicole Kidman turned down roles with Diana every time and wasn’t happy that her best friend Naomi Watts accepted.” Despite Wade’s claims of a beef, Nicki Swift reported that Cruise and Kidman attended Diana’s funeral in 1997.
Fast forward to 2022, and Cruise was in the headlines for being smitten by another royal lady. While Diana was fascinated by the actor, he was all eyes for her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton. During the premier of Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise offered to hold Middleton's hand and escort her as she climbed the stage. However, fans observed that Middleton shifted her clutch bag from one hand to the other and opted to climb the second set of stairs alone. Many suggested that she did this to avoid Cruise's polite advances, potentially creating an awkward moment.
