Meghan Markle has had her fair share of flattering nicknames. Her husband, Prince Harry, affectionately calls her ‘Meg’ or ‘M’. Others, given by Palace staff during her time as a senior royal, however, were less than complimentary. Journalist and author, Tom Quinn, revealed that Markle was secretly named the ‘Duchess of Difficult’ by her staff.
Quinn in his book, Yes Ma'am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, claimed the staff allegedly gave her a slew of unflattering nicknames. As per The London Times, an anonymous palace aid reportedly told Quinn, “She could be difficult because she was finding life difficult—trying to feel her way and work out the intricacies of a positively medieval, labyrinthine system.”
The ‘Duchess of Difficult’ moniker isn't the only secret nickname given to her by her staff. As reported by Page Six, she was also called ‘Mystic Meg’ because she was viewed as a very woke person. A staffer allegedly shared, “Mystic Meg...came about because she was so new agey, so woke, about so many things.” The moniker ‘Mystic Meg’ was a nod to the late English astrologer of the same name. The insider also shared that one of her issues during her time as a senior royal was with 'the servants.' They explained, “One minute she would be really friendly…and the next she would be irritated by the fact they wouldn’t respond instantly at all times of the day and night.”
Markle wasn't the only royal who was given brutal nicknames by staffers. Her husband, Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, was also called a ‘tree hugging leftie’ by his aides. Quinn’s book revealed that a staff member suggested that Markle had a noticeable impact on Harry who had become "far more concerned about social issues and the rights of minorities than he had ever been before Meghan's arrival." “Some of the youngest staff at Kensington Palace would have applauded this, no doubt, but the older staff thought he had become a tree-hugging leftie,” the source spilled.
Coming back to Markle, she was also given a rather bizarre by King Charles III for her determined demeanor. As per the Daily Mail, Markle was dubbed ‘Tungsten’ by her father-in-law during her time as a senior royal. The strong and resilient metal paid an ode to Markle’s tough personality. A source told the outlet, “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a Tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy.” Speaking of names and monikers, the Duchess recently grabbed headlines as she revealed that she now goes by 'Meghan Sussex' instead of 'Markle' as the title she claims is a huge part of her children's identity.
