Queen Elizabeth II was known for her calm demeanor and handled conflicts behind closed doors. But when Meghan Markle chose to wear a white bridal gown on her wedding day, she was allegedly less than pleased. Royal author Tom Bower revealed that the Queen was 'annoyed' as she thought divorcee Markle should’ve followed tradition—as white gowns were only for first-time brides.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding was nothing short of a fairytale. The couple’s big day, held at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, was a blend of tradition and modernity. This modernity didn't sit well with the Queen. According to The Sun, Bower in his book, Revenge, claimed that the Queen was ‘taken aback’ by Markle's decision. He added, “The Queen also questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage.”

Markle was previously married to Hollywood producer, Trevor Engelson, from 2011 to 2013. In 2016, she met Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. In her book My Mother and I, royal author Ingrid Seward also spilled the beans on tensions between the Queen and Markle. Seward writes that the Queen thought her dress was 'too white' for a second marriage. “In the monarch's view, it was not appropriate for a divorcee getting remarried in church to look so flamboyantly virginal,” Seward explained. She also claimed that Prince Philip was 'one of the few wary' of Markle, finding Markle bearing an 'uncanny' resemblance to twice divorced Wallis Simpson, the Queen's uncle’s wife.

Markle, however, wasn't the only royal to break tradition. According to Hello! magazine, even Princess Anne, the Queen’s daughter, wore a short white dress for her 1992 wedding to Timothy Lawrence after her divorce. Her breakaway from royal tradition raised many eyebrows. However, Queen Consort Camilla Parker Bowles chose to wear a white and blue wedding dress during her marriage to King Charles. Similarly, twice divorced Simpson wore a light blue gown during her nuptials to Edward VIII.

The wedding gown debacle wasn't the only incident when Markle ‘annoyed’ the Queen. Another resurfaced video from her and Harry's nuptials went viral for all the wrong reasons. Royal watchers noticed that the pair disrespected the Queen by failing to curtsy. According to royal protocol, men are expected to bow their heads slightly, while women should curtsy when meeting the monarch. However, the mishap was attributed to the sudden change in camera angle. Meghan apparently did curtsy to the Queen. On another occasion, Markle got a sharp response from the Queen when she walked in on the actress being rude to royal staff involved in her food catering for her wedding.
