Despite Prince Harry stepping away from the royal fold and moving to the US, he remained deeply fond of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. When she passed away at 96, he was allegedly left in the dark that she was on her deathbed. Journalist and biographer, Omid Scobie, revealed that the Palace never informed Harry that the Queen was dying.

Queen Elizabeth breathed her last on September 8, 2022, and her official cause of death was listed as ‘old age.’ As reported by People magazine, journalist Scoobie, in his work Endgame, spilled, “By the next morning, the Sussexes had no idea that Buckingham Palace was already planning for the Queen's final hours and the first days of the monarchy's new era— until the Duke's phone started ringing. An unknown number. He usually ignored those.” Scoobie said that his wife, Meghan Markle, urged him to pick up and he accepted the call 'just before it stopped.' He added, “Charles told him he and Camilla were about to leave Dumfries House for Balmoral, where Princess Anne was already by the Queen's side. He told Harry to make his way to Scotland immediately.”

He claims a source close to the Sussexes shared, “[Harry] was completely by himself on this.” As per reports, Harry was not informed about the Queen’s death when his plane took off at 5:35 PM, which was more than two hours after the Queen had passed at 3:10 PM. “His team literally had to beg for them to wait for his plane to land, and they reluctantly agreed to hold the statement back for a little bit,” a family friend spilled.

Harry himself has spoken about how he found out the news in his memoir, Spare. Similar to what Scoobie said, as per the BBC, Harry wrote, “When the plane started to descend, I saw that my phone lit up. It was a message from Meg: ‘Call me when you get this.’ I looked at the BBC website. My grandmother had died. My father was King.” Upon reaching Balmoral, he writes that he whispered to the Queen, “I hoped she was happy” and “that she was with Grandfather now,” referring to her husband, Prince Philip.

Harry’s memoir also details the heartbreaking moment when his father asked him to refrain from bringing Markle to see the Queen. As reported by the Mirror, Harry penned, “He said I was welcome at Balmoral, but he didn't want...her. He started to lay out his reason, which was nonsensical and disrespectful.” In response, Harry claims he said, “Don't ever speak about my wife that way.” Biographer Robert Hardman claims that the King banned Markle from coming to avoid any family conflict. Markle arrived later for the Queen’s funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 19, 2022.
