The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, who stepped down as a senior royal in 2020, always wanted to be a queen. A video shared by her childhood best friend, Ninaki Priddy, to Daily Mail, features 8-year-old Markle pretending to be a queen and commanding kids to bake her cookies and sew her a dress.
Shot in 1990, Markle can be seen sporting a gold crown and acting in an impromptu play at a birthday party. In the video, one of her friends addresses her as ‘Your Highness’ and asks if there’s anything she needs done 'around the kingdom.' Markle wisely orders, “Yes. Make 900,000 cookies and sew me a nice dress.” When her friend questions her about the unreasonable cookie demand, she replies, “It’s for this meeting I’m having. I’m having people from Florida, Canada, Mississippi, and Missouri.” According to E! News, the Suits actress also aced a fake British accent. At the end of the recording, the cameraman asks, “Meghan, are you bored?” to which she honestly replies, “Yes,” like a true queen.
The video has been widely shared on social media. On X (formerly Twitter) a person commented, “She was already good at directing/bossing others around.” Another chimed, “Her demeanor at that young age is already very dominant. It's creepy how she is now is how she was then.” Meanwhile, a fan gushed, “This one’s gold, I had seen it many times...Thanks for digging it out!”
Commenting on the clip, Priddy said, “The show was called Your Royal Highness and the star was Meg.” She added, “It is very funny to see this now, and given what is going on with her life it’s quite eye-opening. She was always the center of attention, always the ringleader—it was my birthday but she took the starring role!” It seems as if Markle was destined to be a part of the royal family.
Markle was always intrigued by the royals, especially greatly admiring her late mother-in-law Princess Diana. Another throwback photo from 1996, features a 15-year-old Markle sitting outside Buckingham Palace with her friend. Netizens were quick to chime in on the same as the picture went viral on social media. A person remarked, “Yep, that was God’s plan,” while another quipped, “Never thought she would be moving in!”
From a young age, Markle was involved in school activities, including acting and volunteering, and developed a deep passion for social justice. Her penchant for the same came to light when, at the age of 11, she successfully campaigned to change a sexist television commercial. Markle wrote to Procter & Gamble to object to a dish soap advertisement which included the line: "Mothers around America are fighting greasy pots and pans." Instead, she asked them to change it to 'people all over America'.
