Resurfaced Photo Shows Princess Diana Dozing Off at a Royal Event — But She Had a Valid Reason

Princess Diana was known for public appearances—attentive and always radiating warmth and compassion. While occasionally her face bore evidence of the pressures of royal life, one photo from 1981 seemed very unlike that of the Princess. Diana was captured dozing off mid-event. However, there's a happy explanation behind the same—20-year-old Diana was pregnant with her first child, Prince William.
The picture now dubbed the 'Sleeping Beauty' snap of Diana was clicked by photographer Tim Graham as she napped in a plush red chair. It showed that beneath the glitz and glamour, Diana was all but human. For the event, The Splendours Of The Gonzagas Exhibition Gala at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Diana wore a stunning flowing chiffon dress by Bellville Sasson which added to her looking like she was straight out of a Disney movie.
The following day, on November 5, 1981, Buckingham Palace officially announced that the Princess was expecting her first child. Naturally, her exhaustion was understood. On the Royally Obsessed podcast, palace insiders Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie shared that her pregnancy announcement included personal congratulatory messages from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip—a first in the royal family. Royal expert Marlene Koenig, author of Queen Victoria’s Descendants, spoke to Reader’s Digest and claimed, “Diana got married at a very young age and, as we learned soon after, fell pregnant with Prince William just two months after the wedding. She was in the public eye around the clock and didn’t have time to adjust to her new life.”
Diana had a tough time navigating her pregnancy in the public eye. In February, when she was 5 months pregnant, she flew off to the Bahamas for a short vacation with Prince Charles. She was, unfortunately, tracked down and photographed in a strapless bikini with a visible baby bump. “The Queen saw it as a privacy violation. After all, Diana and Charles were on their babymoon, and the last thing they would have wanted was to be exploited again,” shared Koenig. Later when Diana was in labor, thousands of eager admirers gathered outside St. Mary’s Hospital in London. Just 24 hours later, she emerged on the stairs, radiating elegance in a polka-dot dress as she introduced her firstborn to the world. Her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, also paid tribute to her iconic style by wearing a similar outfit when she introduced Prince George to the public.
In Andrew Morton’s Diana: Her True Story, Diana herself reflected, “When we had William, we had to find a date in the diary that suited Charles and his polo. William had to be induced because I couldn’t handle the pressure any longer.” Diana later revealed that the palace finally agreed on a date that fitted Charles' polo schedule for her to give birth.
