An uncomfortable moment caught on camera has sparked new debate about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's relationship. Commenting on a video that has now gone viral, a body language expert opined that Prince Harry scolded Meghan Markle in a way that seemed more like a parent would to their child. As per the reports, the footage, taken during the 2019 Trooping the Color celebrations, captured Harry asking Markle to 'turn around' when she tried to start a conversation right before the national anthem played.
As Markle stood in front of Harry on the balcony, body language expert Judi James claimed this likely left her anxious and feeling left out, as reported by the Daily Mail. In the footage, other senior royals can be seen talking to each other, and Harry also turns around to talk to someone else. Markle, then still new to the family, tries to talk to her husband, seeking a friendly face. However, instead of explaining why she shouldn’t turn her back to the crowd, Harry allegedly scolded her, acting as though she were a naughty child. As reported by the Daily Express, when Markle turned around for the second time, Harry bluntly ordered, "Turn around." As she stared back at him, he furiously instructed, "Look [at the crowd.]"
James opined, “Harry’s body language seems to do little to support or protect her. He should have been the one royal responsible for hosting his wife in the UK and helping her navigate her way through the royal protocol rules. Instead, when she turns, his expression seems to remain impassive, and at the second turn, he appears to enforce royal protocol with a meaningful and rather authoritative eyebrow flash.” She also claimed that Markle seemed upset by Harry’s behavior. "Meghan was a successful, confident woman. The gesture from Harry seems to look more like the way you might urge a naughty kid.”
She added, “Her facial expression looks unhappy as she turns. Her checking rituals suggest she is clearly trying to get it right, but might prefer a kindly loving smile rather than the warning raise of the eyebrows here.” James sympathized, “It’s hard not to feel...for Meghan here. She is still new to The Firm, and the balcony moments are the most formal and globally visible appearances of the royal family en masse.” This was also Markle’s last time at the palace balcony, as she and Harry stepped back from their royal duties in 2020.
On another occasion, commenting on a viral clip, James claimed that Harry sometimes behaves like a child who is fearful of losing Markle, while she seems to be a more dominant partner. Quite contrary to the balcony moment, right? This is because the video in question was one after Markle's royal exit. James was weighing in on a clip of the couple from their Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, as reported by the Daily Mail.
