Queen Letizia's 'Affair': Spanish Consort Accused of Cheating on King Felipe With Her Brother-In-Law
After nearly 20 years of marriage, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are facing a scandal as the latter has been accused of having an affair with her former brother-in-law, Jaime del Burgo. The then-Princess of Asturias allegedly cheated on the then-Prince Felipe during the early years of their marriage in the mid-2000s, according to del Burgo.
"Love. I wear your pashmina. It's like feeling you by my side. It takes care of me. It protects me. I count the hours until we see each other again. Love you. Get out of here. Yours," del Burgo shared on his X account of an alleged letter the future queen once sent to him. He has since deleted the post.
He claims to have met and started a relationship with Letizia when she was a journalist in the years leading up to her marriage to Spain's king-in-waiting in 2004. He went on to claim that he and the Princess-to-be had dinner the evening before her wedding day, where she reportedly told the entrepreneur to "never leave me," despite being betrothed to another. Jaime del Borgo went on to marry the Queen's sister, Telma, in 2012 before their divorce in 2014.
On June 19, 2014, King Juan Carlos I abdicated Spain's throne, and his son and heir immediately became King Felipe VI at that moment. Letizia was now the nation's Queen Consort and went on to become popular with the Spanish people in her husband's near decade-long reign. The couple have two daughters, Leonor, Princess of Asturias, and heiress to the throne, as well as the Infanta Sofia.
The entrepreneur has faced a firestorm of criticism since making his claims. He has shared how he is currently receiving death threats since coming forward with his allegations.
"I don't change a comma of my deleted posts," he stated on his social media account.
del Burgo continued: "I appreciate the messages from those who have understood that I would have my reasons. I hold no grudge against those who have threatened to kill me. I don't feel proud. But the truth is what it is. I recognize only one king in heaven, and his name is Jesus of Nazareth. He will judge me."
Neither the King nor the Queen has made any public comment on the claims by Her Majesty's former brother-in-law. As in other monarchies, custom in Spain also dictates that matters of speculation, controversy, and/or implied scandals are not addressed by members of the Spanish royal family.
An affair rumor is also currently surrounding Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, who is accused of cheating on Crown Princess Mary with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova.
Daily Express reported on del Borgo's claims.
