Diana’s Response to Why She’d Never be Queen Makes Her Death Even More Tragic: "They've Decided..."

Martin Bashir interviews Princess Diana at Kensington Palace for the television program Panorama.
As her marriage unraveled, Princess Diana knew she would never become a queen. In her infamous 1995 BBC Panorama interview, the Princess of Wales candidly shared how the institution she married into, had no desire to see that happen. Her conversation with journalist Martin Bashir was more than just a mere sit down—it was a raw spilling of just how bad things were behind the scenes.

As Bashir asked, “Do you think you will ever be Queen?” Diana firmly replied, “No, I don’t, no.” As reported by the Washington Post, she explained, “I’d like to be a queen of people’s hearts, in people’s hearts, but I don’t see myself being Queen of this country. I don’t think many people will want me to be Queen. Actually, when I say many people, I mean the establishment that I married into because they have decided that I’m a non-starter.”
The bombshell interview was viewed by millions worldwide. And as Diana eerily predicted, she never lived to hold the title of the Queen. Instead, as per her wish, she went down in history as People's Princess. Decades later, the world continues to honor Diana's remarkable life and legacy, for prioritizing humanity and sincerity over fame. The late Princess' philanthropic endeavors spanned across South Africa, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and India. Although hating the spotlight, Diana, with time, learned to use her fame as a force for good, shining a light on causes like leprosy, homelessness, demining, domestic violence, AIDS, and mental health.
As for her BBC interview, as clips of Diana's chilling answers make the rounds on the internet, netizens have only love for the Princess. On X (formerly Twitter), a person penned, "Read her story and all I can say is...if all leaders can have this kind of heart then the whole world will be in harmony." Another chimed, "Leading by the heart is what makes us human and what makes a human great. It's the ultimate standard measurement of a person. We are sad when they pass away, and we miss them over time." In a similar vein, a comment also read, "Deeply [sic] profound to see Princess Diana speak with such sincerity and self-awareness. She redefined the royal connection with the public, and it's evident why she was so loved. Truly the queen of people's hearts."
Interestingly, during the said interview, Bashir also questioned Diana if the heir to the throne, Charles, wished to be king. Diana's answer to the same was even more shocking. She opined that Charles loved his independence and hence would struggle to adjust to the responsibilities that come with the Crown.
