Princess Diana’s playful nature and deep bond with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, are well-documented, but one prank stands out as particularly memorable for William. In an ITV documentary marking the 20th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death, William recounted the time his mother invited supermodels to their home as a surprise, which left him both awestruck and utterly embarrassed, as reported by The Express.
"She organized when I came home from school to have Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell waiting at the top of the stairs," William recounted. "I was probably a 12 or 13-year-old boy who had posters of them on his wall." He described the moment as a mix of overwhelming shock and complete embarrassment. “I went bright red and didn’t know quite what to say and sort of fumbled, and I think pretty much fell down the stairs on the way up,” he added. William shared that after the initial embarrassment, the experience became a cherished memory. He said, "That was a very funny memory that's lived with me forever."
Campbell later also shared her own experience of the event in her YouTube series No Filter with Naomi. She said, "I went with Claudia [Schiffer] and Christy, and he was coming home from school...We had gotten there before...and Princess Diana was like, ‘Okay.’ So we were just like, ‘What do we do?’ I mean, it was so sweet.”
Campbell expressed her admiration for Diana, describing her as 'humble' and 'down-to-earth.' She stressed, “Loved Princess Diana; I just loved her. I’m blessed to know her for the time I did." She added, "I was blushing. I was so intimidated meeting her and being at Kensington Palace, and just how completely down-to-earth she was...There’s so much protocol, I guess. Not being English, I don’t understand some of it.”
The story also highlighted Diana’s desire to give her children a balance between royal life and normal childhood experiences. According to a royal correspondent, Judy Wade, Diana wanted her children to "keep their feet on the ground" and followed an unconventional parenting style, which included visits to theme parks, local fast food joints, public schooling, homeless shelters, and more.
In the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Harry spoke about the love and light their mother brought into their lives, as reported by CheatSheet. He said, “Of course, as a son, I would say this — she was the best mum in the world. She smothered us with love, that’s for sure.” Reflecting on her cheeky sense of humor, Harry added, “That sort of childish, fun element really came out when she was spending time with us."
