Princess Diana's Lost Love Letters: Biographer Says Iconic Late Royal Wanted World 'to See' Her Deep Affection for Prince Charles
Diana, Princess of Wales and King Charles III once held "deep affection" for one another, the iconic late royal's lost letters revealed.
"There was a period of great love between them," veteran royal biographer Ingrid Seward told an outlet.
The princess was reported to have said that she wanted the world to know about the love letters then-Prince Charles used to send her in the earliest years of their union, which ended in divorce in 1996.
"Diana told me very shortly before she died that she wished people could see the love letters that she had from Charles," Seward added. "She really wanted people to know that she loved Charles, and he loved her. And I always remembered that. And she wanted the boys [Prince William and Prince Harry] to know that," she continued. "There was a period of great love between them."
Diana herself once told journalist Andrew Morton, who published her explosive semi-autobiography Diana: Her True Story in 1992, that she and the future king "were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be."
The fairytale did apparently start to fracture after the future Duke of Sussex came into the world, as the one-time future queen revealed in audio tapes released in 2023.
"My husband won’t even talk to mummy, barely," Lady Diana claimed. "Because of Harry’s christening, Charles went up to mummy and said, 'You know, we were so disappointed. We thought it would be a girl.'" Diana then shared how her mother, Frances Shand Kydd, "snapped" back at the heir to the throne in front of Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the royal family.
"'You should realize how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal,'" Frances remarked.
"Ever since that day, the shutters have come down. That’s what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him," Diana continued.
The former HRH was a fan of hand letter writing, and it has been revealed that one such memo she wrote in late September 1984, days after Harry's birth, spoke about the loving bond between William and his new baby brother.
"William adores his little brother and spends the entire time pouring an endless supply of hugs and kisses over Harry," the late royal gushed to Violet "Collie" Collison, her parents' head housekeeper at Park House on the Sandringham Estate.
The exact story behind the auction of Princess Diana's letters revolves around a collection of handwritten notes and cards that offer an intimate glimpse into her personal life and relationships. These letters, set to be auctioned by Sworders in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex, were written by Diana to her friend Collison. The assistant was a close confidante of Diana and her mother, and the letters cover various aspects of Diana's life, including her family dynamics, emotions, and experiences as a member of the royal family.
