Royal Curtain Call Surprise: Inside Princess Diana's 'Cheeky' Backstage Visit With Dance Cast for a Baby Prince William Parody Show
The late Diana, Princess of Wales, celebrated for her down-to-earth demeanor and playful nature, once attended a dance performance that included a lighthearted parody of her son, Prince William, as a baby!
The humorous portrayal didn’t offend Diana — instead, she embraced it with charm," according to her former dance instructor Anne Allan who described the event in her new book Dancing With Diana.
Wayne Sleep, the renowned dancer and choreographer, had a unique encounter with Diana when she expressed interest in attending his new production, Dash in 1983. However, Diana didn’t want her presence to attract attention.
Instead of attending publicly, she asked to slip in quietly and watch the performance from backstage, Allan writes. This posed challenges for Sleep and the team, as sneaking a high-profile royal into the theater carried risks.
With concerns about safety and protocol, Allan admitted that managing Diana’s presence in the dark backstage area would be tricky, especially from a security standpoint.
To complicate matters, Dash featured a comedic segment centered around Diana’s then-infant firstborn son. The scene involved a performer wearing a baby outfit, humorously portraying William. Worried that the parody might offend the princess, the dancers decided to give her a heads-up.
To their relief, Diana’s reaction "was nothing short of delighted." She found the idea amusing and insisted she had to witness it for herself.
To minimize attention, the production team arranged for Diana to join discreetly during the second half of the show, bypassing intermission to avoid being noticed by the audience or media.
The plan worked seamlessly, and Diana, accompanied by her security team, slipped into a seat in the wings unnoticed. From her hidden spot, she thoroughly enjoyed the show, and Sleep even played up his performance for her corner of the stage, much to Diana’s delight, leaving her "grinning from ear to ear."
The royal-themed segment, known as the "Baby Wales" skit, was a hit. Diana loved the playful portrayal of her young son, and Sleep later remarked on how much he appreciated Diana’s ability to laugh at herself and embrace the humor. Her willingness to enjoy the lighthearted parody was a reflection of her famously warm and approachable personality.
At the end of the show, Diana and her entourage were quietly escorted out through a back exit, leaving the press completely unaware of her presence. Meanwhile, the cast backstage was stunned to see her among them just before making their entrances, creating an electric energy for the second half of the performance.
Diana’s unexpected visit not only added a sense of excitement to the night but also perfectly captured the charm and spontaneity that made her so beloved.
The princess and Sleep would go on to famously surprise Prince Charles in 1985 when Diana performed with the dancer in a duet to Billy Joel’s "Uptown Girl" at the Royal Opera House in London.
