Palace Rule Breakers: Prince William and Kate Middleton 'Make Their Own Rules' With Princess of Wales' 'Personal' New Video
Some royal traditionalists are objecting to Catherine, Princess of Wales and Prince William's new "intimate" video. In addition to announcing she was cancer-free, the clip was released to the pair's X account and showed a future British king and queen in loving embraces surrounded by their three children.
Amid the protocol hoopla, one royal expert pointed out, "A video means that firstly you connect very, very personally rather than just in a statement," Richard Fitzwilliams shared with Us Weekly.
"You can also show family life, and you can also get an impression of what normality is like," he added. "And that is of course what we see. But equally, if you listen to the words, you understand that for nine months there’s been a struggle. And that struggle has been tough, and there’s plenty still to go."
The reaction from some observers has mostly centered around seeing the next monarch "in shorts," and his queen-to-be sharing "loving, common embraces of PDA."
One commenter on X said, "Somehow I doubt Richard the Lionheart [or] Henry VIII would approve, let alone Elizabeth II," about William's predecessors of storied history, and his late grandmother.
Of Her late Majesty and the changing nature of royal protocol, Fitzwilliams continued, "From a public point of view, this gave us an insight into [their] personal [lives] that we hadn’t seen before. I think it’s unique and deeply touching, because I think that what they felt was that it’s one thing to say what you’ve been through or try [to] convey it. And it’s quite another to actually show closeness, which members of the royal family normally don't."
He concluded, "I think there are important exceptions, and I think this was an exception. It reminds me of the Queen’s comment: 'Well, protocol is rubbish.' They make their own rules."
The future queen is officially cancer-free and shared in the "moving" new clip on @kensingtonroyal's official social accounts. "As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family," she said. "Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown."
"The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you," the next Queen consort continued. "With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything."
Only hours later, a teaser tweet on X from Netflix about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's new documentary POLO dropped.
Netflix said of the show, "POLO is a new documentary series that follows elite global players and offers an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of the sport. From Archewell Productions and Boardwalk Pictures."
