Prince William's 'Action-Packed' Plea: Future King Asks 'Jason Bourne' Director to 'Please' Make Another Installment
Prince William, a well-known fan of the Bourne franchise, recently expressed his admiration for the films to director Paul Greengrass during a BAFTA event.
The royal fan of action movies, and future King of Great Britain, even went so far as to outright ask the acclaimed filmmaker for another installment at the event!
"Another Bourne, please?" His Royal Highness asked the director of United 93, to which he "laughed and shook his head."
Greengrass told the monarch-in-waiting, "Not for me, they need somebody younger, I’ve done my bit. But I hope they get somebody great and young to do it, I think they’re in the process."
Although the director declined, the exchange reflects William’s enthusiasm for the action-packed series, in which he and other fans are now left wondering who might take the helm for the next Bourne movie.
Greengrass directed three of the Bourne films: The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), and Jason Bourne (2016). These films, known for their intense action, espionage, and fast-paced, gritty realism, center on Jason Bourne, a former CIA operative suffering from amnesia who fights to uncover his past.
Matt Damon starred as Bourne in the series, which "set new standards for the spy thriller genre with its complex narratives, handheld camera techniques, and immersive fight sequences." The franchise's success made Jason Bourne an iconic action hero and solidified Damon’s career. After declining to return for The Bourne Legacy (2012), which starred Jeremy Renner in a spinoff role, Damon reunited with the action-oriented filmmaker for Jason Bourne in 2016.
His Royal Highness is also a fan of Tom Cruise and attended the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. In May of that year, Prince William and Catherine, then-Duchess of Cambridge, walked the red carpet at the film's London premiere. The event was a significant highlight, as the royal couple met with Cruise and other cast members.
One royal insider shared, "Prince William's attendance wasn't just a royal formality; it reflected his genuine interest in aviation and action films. Having served as a helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force's Search and Rescue Force, William has a personal connection to the themes of both Top Gun movies."
Tom Cruise also remarked after the star-studded premiere that he and William share a love of flying, "strengthening the rapport between them."
The iconic American movie star owns a luxurious flat in London's Hyde Park neighborhood, which is a short distance from both Buckingham Palace and the Prince and Princess of Wales' London base, Kensington Palace. The actor is said to regularly throw afternoon tea parties for his famous friends at 4 P.M., which is the traditional time for "high tea" in the United Kingdom. His service and entertainment staff must all sign NDAs and are prohibited from taking pictures.
Variety reported on Greengrass' remarks.
