Prince Harry’s ongoing battle for security in the UK has been a challenging journey. A report suggests that his ‘worst fears’ were ‘confirmed’ when he heard secret evidence being presented in court. The Duke, who was in London from April 8-9, believes his police protection was withdrawn to prevent him and Meghan Markle from leaving Britain to start a new life.
As per The Telegraph, Harry described the decision about the confidential evidence as ‘difficult to swallow.’ He has previously hinted that his security battle was at the heart of the rift with his father, King Charles III. As he left the Royal Courts of Justice following a two-day hearing, he said, “We were trying to create this happy house.” The Telegraph reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex viewed the removal of their security as a means to try and force them back to Britain.
Most of Harry's appeal was heard in private due to ‘confidential evidence.’ Commenting on the same, a Palace source told The Guardian, “These are matters of security and government policy and, as usual, it would be inappropriate to comment or intervene on either.” As per Hello! magazine, a source explained that Harry’s goal was to be able to visit the UK with his family. The source added, “He wants to ensure the safety of himself and his family while in the UK so his children can know his home country and so he can help support his patronages and their important work.”
On the second day of his two-day court proceeding, his lawyer, Shaheed Fatima KC, told the court that his ‘life is at stake.’ As per The Independent, she said during the closing submission, “There is a person sitting behind me whose safety, whose security, and whose life is at stake.” She added, “There is a person sitting behind me who is being told he is getting a special bespoke process when he knows and has experienced a process that is manifestly inferior in every respect.” Fatima also alleged that the Prince had been ‘singled out for different, unjustified and inferior treatment.’
As a part of the hearing on April 9, a lawyer for the Home Office told the court, “There is nothing about the appellant’s announcement in January 2020 that he was to step back from his role in the royal family and spend most of his time abroad that was unusual. It was a category of its own.” It is reported that Harry is granted taxpayer-funded police security on a ‘case-by-case’ basis. This means that when he returns to the UK, he will only receive it if the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) finds it necessary.
