Prince Harry's Karma: Duke Is Now Paying the Consequences for 'Sharing His Truth'
Prince Harry's relationship with his family "may never be the same" thanks to the fallout from his damaging memoir, Spare, nearly one year later.
"As the instigator of all the turmoil that has resulted in him and Meghan being ostracized by the family, it’s not as easy as saying 'sorry' and hoping to brush it all under the carpet," PR expert Laura Perkes told an outlet.
"Old wounds have been reopened, new wounds have appeared, and many people have been hurt, either directly or in the crossfire. He made the decision to share his truth, but his truth isn’t always the absolute truth. Many people feel betrayed by him, and that’s not easily forgivable," Perkes added.
After the controversies surrounding "Megxit" in early 2020 and Harry and Meghan Markle's Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021, many wondered how relations between the fiery-haired prince and his family could get worse. Harry & Meghan arrived on Netflix in December 2022, and its six episodes pointedly criticized the British monarchy and even mocked the revered, late Queen Elizabeth II. One month later, his memoir turned his rift with his family into a "nuclear" inferno many claim can never be repaired.
The fifth in line to the throne attacked his brother, Prince William, his sister-in-law, Kate, Princess of Wales, and his stepmother, Queen Camilla, in the book. He also spoke negatively about King Charles III's parenting skills. All of this led numerous royal analysts to paint the Montecito duo as toxic, destructive figures.
"Sadly, a lot of what they do seems to be calculated to give the illusion that they're living by their organization's tagline: leading the way with compassion, but the public and the media don't buy it. They always seem to try too hard and then miss the mark," Perkes observed.
She continued: "It may be that they wanted to create a family tradition, taking Archie and Lilibet trick or treating to show that they're 'just a normal family' doing normal things, but to me, it feels like a PR stunt in disguise. It's the image they want to portray. The reason they stepped down as working royals was to have more freedom away from the scrutiny of the media eye, yet they want their 'normal family life' captured by photographers, no doubt to achieve more positive publicity."
"I think there is a very bad feeling in the royal family about Harry and Meghan that if they let them back into the royal fold, they will be betrayed again," Diana, Princess of Wales's former butler, Paul Burrell, dished.
He continued: "They see it as airing dirty laundry in public and telling tales in public when they know all too well that they shouldn’t do that. They see it as Harry now making money off the back of being royal, which is wrong in their books."
