The Queen 'Is Looking Down on All of Us': Prince Harry Honors His Grandmother 1 Year After Her Death
Prince Harry took a moment to honor his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II at Thursday night's WellChild Awards.
"As you know, I was unable to attend the awards last year, as my grandmother passed away" the Duke of Sussex shared. "As you also probably know, she would have been the first person to insist that I still come to be with you all instead of going to her."
"And that’s precisely why I know, exactly one year on, that she is looking down on all of us tonight, happy we’re together, continuing to spotlight such an incredible community," the fifth in line to the British throne added.
Harry and Meghan Markle were both in London this time last year for the same ceremony, but their appearance had to be dropped when Elizabeth II quickly fell into ill health on the morning of September 8, 2022. The late monarch would pass away at 3:10 PM British time, with King Charles III immediately ascending the throne in her place.
In his book, Spare, Harry wrote about how he allegedly asked his brother Prince William for a ride to Balmoral Castle to be with her as she died, but William turned his sibling down. Both William and Charles, according to Harry, did not want Meghan at the Queen's bedside when she passed. The Montecito royal had to take his own private flight to the Scottish Highlands — arriving hours after his grandmother died.
The fiery-haired prince claimed that he learned of his grandmother's demise on a news app just minutes before he landed near Balmoral. Although Elizabeth II died ten minutes past three, her passing was announced to the world around three hours later.
Harry and Meghan stayed on in Britain throughout the mourning period and the monarch's state funeral on September 19, 2022. The Duchess of Sussex has not set foot in the nation that made her a royal since that day.
As The Royal Observer previously reported, Harry will only be in his home country until the afternoon of September 8, after which he will leave for Dusseldorf, Germany, to open the Invictus Games on September 9.
There were rumors circulating that the King's youngest son may meet with him, but this is apparently not the case, since the monarch will be in seclusion at Balmoral.
