'I Don't Want to Do This Alone': Prince Harry Asks Meghan Markle to Join Him on Trip to Britain in May
Prince Harry is expected to take a much-hyped visit to the U.K. on May 8 to attend the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Invictus Games at St Paul's Cathedral — but the former military hero "does not want to go alone."
"He [Harry] would prefer it if the entire family made regular visits to see his family and build bridges, but there is so much going on behind the scenes that it just isn't possible at the moment," a source close to the Sussex family spilled.
"It is a very important anniversary because the service of Thanksgiving is being held, to celebrate 10 years of the Invictus Games and this of course was a remarkable thing that Harry founded," royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams shared with an outlet.
"One of the problems is that it will be overshadowed by whether Meghan will be there, I would think not. And then again as to whether or not he will see his father will King Charles play a role in peacemaking?" he added.
It is speculated but not confirmed that Meghan Markle, along with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet Diana, could join Harry when he travels to London. It would be the Duchess of Sussex's first trip to Britain since Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral in September 2022. It would be the Sussex kids' first trip back since the late monarch's Platinum Jubilee celebrations a few months earlier.
But a Sussex return to the U.K. is not without a "slew of potential problems," a Kensington Palace aide spilled.
"The rift is very deep, as we all know the Sussexes for four years have attacked the royal family and William is naturally suspicious because he doesn't trust Harry," Fitzwilliams observed.
He continued: "With very good reason because of the attacks. However, given the fact that King Charles is undergoing treatment for cancer and given the fact that Catherine is seriously ill, preventative chemotherapy is, I should think, desperately stressful for him. If you made that courageous video message to the nation, would they get together? I suspect the answer to this lies in private talks privately that we don't know about."
There is then the longstanding question of whether a reunion of the regal brothers is something May 2024 could provide royal watchers.
"So we know that William was in touch with Harry after the video message. The reports were the Sussexes didn't know of Catherine's condition before then," the expert stated.
Fitzwilliams concluded: "The facts are, however, that we simply don't know what's going to happen. But it is possible that since King Charles has never closed the door, since they're both his sons, and since two senior members of the royal family are seriously ill, this presents an entirely new scenario. A new bridge."
