Princes William and Prince Harry once opened up about the final words they told their mother, Princess Diana, before her tragic death in 1997. The royal brothers spoke about the last phone call, recounting the emotions that they went through, replaying the conversation in their heads. William and Harry were at Balmoral Castle in Scotland when Diana called them from Paris. In a documentary by ITV, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Harry expressed his regret over how he ended that call too quickly.
As reported by CNN, he said, “I can’t necessarily remember what I said, but all I do remember is regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was.” He added, “If I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother, the things I would have said to her. Looking back at it now, it’s incredibly hard. I have to deal with that for the rest of my life...if I’d had even the slightest inkling that her life was going to be taken that night.”
Speaking of the phone call, William also shared, "The very last memory I have is a phone call from Balmoral [Castle in Scotland]. At the time, Harry and I were running around, minding our own business, playing with our cousins, and having a very good time. Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say 'Goodbye, see you later, can I go off?'” He added, “If I'd known what was going to happen, I wouldn't have been quite so blasé about it. That phone call sticks in my mind quite heavily." The documentary featured several rare videos and pictures of Diana with her young sons.
One such video had Diana and a young Harry enjoying a water ride together at Thorpe Park, an amusement park in England, as reported by E! Online. In the documentary, Harry shared that his mom was a kid at heart. When people ask if she was fun, he claims he always hears her loud, happy laugh in his head. He also remembered one of the things she used to tell him: “Be as naughty as you want — just don’t get caught.” William, on the other hand, shared an incident when Diana surprised him by arranging a meeting with his favorite supermodels.
Harry was only 12, and William was 15, when they walked behind their mother’s casket. They were joined by their father, then-Prince Charles, their grandfather, Prince Philip, and their uncle, Earl Spencer, as reported by People magazine. Diana died in a car crash in Paris after being followed by photographers in the early hours of August 31, 1997. In a deeply emotional statement, Harry once shared that the same photographers who chased his mother into the tunnel also took pictures of her as she lay dying in the backseat of the car.
