The 'Fab 3'—Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate Middleton—were once very close. Commenting on their bond, royal expert Katie Nicoll once revealed that Harry had planned to make a cheeky joke about Middleton’s ‘killer legs’ during her wedding to brother Prince William. The racy joke idea, however, was swiftly shut down by Harry's then-girlfriend.
Before Harry’s dramatic exit from the royal family in 2020, he was very close to his sister-in-law, Middleton. As reported by The Mirror, Harry’s cheeky joke about Middleton’s legs for his best man speech was shut down by Chelsea Davy, who stepped in and said it was 'too much'. According to the outlet, Nicoll wrote in her book Harry: Life, Loss and Love, recounted, “She had helped Harry edit the best man’s speech, sensitively advising him to take out a line about Kate’s ‘killer legs’ that might have embarrassed the bride.” Davy allegedly reasoned that his comment about her ‘killer legs’ was a risky thing to say about any bride at her wedding, let alone the future Queen of England.
Reportedly, Harry didn’t get the opportunity to give a proper best man’s speech but was allowed to say a few words. He did, however, manage to leave guests laughing and crying as he made other jokes at his brother’s expense, sharing also sweet stories about how their love inspired him. Middleton herself also teared up. While things looked merry on the surface, behind the scenes, things weren't quite so. In his memoir, Spare, Harry said he was forced to go along with the 'bare-faced lie' and act as William’s best man “to spare interest in the lives of the ‘real’ best men.”
Fast forward to 2018, William took revenge and made a dirty joke at his brother’s expense during his wedding to Meghan Markle. The Sunday Times reports that the Prince is said to have told a ‘filthy’ joke about ‘wet knickers’ at the evening reception at Frogmore House. Unfortunately, just how filthy the joke was is not known as William's exact words have not been revealed. William had also pulled a prank on him at the reception and ‘floored’ some of the guests in the process. Harry, at the time, had fallen off a ladder while changing a lightbulb, so William cheekily tied a ladder to the back of Harry’s and Markle’s car as a nod to the incident.
Harry’s once-close bond with his sister-in-law soured after his bombshell memoir, Spare. Nicoll told The Sun, “While Kate and Harry used to be very, very close, there's been a complete breakdown of that relationship…I think it is more a case of feeling very disappointed, very let down, and feeling hurt knowing that she had no right of reply and Harry knew fully well she had no right of reply.” The last time the pair was seen together was during Queen Elizabeth’s funeral service on 19 September 2022 at Westminster Abbey.
