King Charles understandably had a highly emotional response when he was informed about his mother, Queen Elizabeth II's, passing. On September 8, 2022, the world mourned the death of the Queen at the age of 96. That morning, Buckingham Palace had announced that the Queen was under strict medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. As concern grew, her closest family members hurried, hoping to be with her in her final hours.
In the morning, Charles was there by the Queen’s side at Balmoral. Later, he left her bedside to for his residence nearby. When he was returning to the castle, he got the dreaded phone call that confirmed the unfortunate news that his mother was no more, as reported by Showbiz Cheatsheet. Charles responded with just three simple words. As reported by the Daily Express, royal author Robert Hardman shared, “After being called 'Your Majesty' for the first time, Charles simply said, 'We're nearly there' and then continued up to the castle."
Hardman, in his book Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story, added, “History will record that, seven decades later, on the afternoon of 8 September 2022, her son and heir was on an unmarked Scottish country road, at the wheel of his car, when he was first addressed as 'Your Majesty.'” Charles later issued an official statement about his mother’s death.
As reported by HuffPost, he said, “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.” He added, “During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
She became queen at age 25 when her father, King George VI, passed away. She was the second-longest reigning monarch in the world. Meanwhile, even after her health started declining, the Queen kept her promise to serve the nation until the very end. She was about to travel to London to meet and appoint Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister. However, due to her health, she came to her instead, as reported by the Daily Mail. After the meeting, the Queen found time to watch her horse win a race at Goodwood that afternoon. Overall, she was in a cheerful mood and was said to be lively and happy before dinner.
