Earlier this year Meghan Markle made her social media comeback as she got ready to re-launch her lifestyle brand, As Ever. In a recent Instagram post, the Duchess of Sussex, who is known to have deep admiration for Princess Diana, paid a heartfelt tribute to her late mother-in-law. In the said video, Markle walked through her Montecito garden wearing a Northwestern University sweatshirt—one of Diana's go-to casual outfits from the 90's.

She captioned the post, “A small break from work to soak in the weekend ☀️.” In the video, we also get a glimpse of Markle's beautiful garden as she watered her plants. In another clip, she was seen laughing, wearing sunglasses as she soaked in the sunlight. As for the purple university sweatshirt, the Duchess was embracing a part of her past—she graduated from the said university in 2003, as reported by The Independent.

Meanwhile, Diana was last seen wearing the sweater in June 1996, in Chicago. She paired it with white shorts and black sunglasses, a casual yet classic look. She received the shirt as a gift in 1995 during a visit to the university, where she helped raise funds for its cancer center. Markle, wearing the same almost three decades later was a happy coincidence. While some saw it as a heartfelt gesture, others on the internet were quick to criticize her. On X (formerly Twitter) a person slammed, "Always copying other people, established ideas, etc. Always imitating Princess Diana. Why doesn’t she imitate her own mother’s clothes?" Another penned, "Whatever Diana wore, she wore with grace. Meg can copy whatever she wants, but she has no class. This Northwestern sweater is weird… Lady Di wore it better."

In a similar vein, a comment read, "She will never be Princess Diana. There is only one. Unfortunately her life ended far too soon...Meghan will be forgotten." Meanwhile, a fan revealed, "The mother of one of Meghan's closest childhood friends from school, Sonia Ardakani, once revealed that her daughter and Meghan were captivated by the life of Harry's late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and used to watch a video of her wedding to Prince Charles over and over." A netizen also gushed, "Had her mother-in-law been alive to see it, she probably would have loved it."

This wasn’t the first time Markle copied the late royal’s iconic style. In November 2021, at the Salute to Freedom Gala, she wore Diana’s Cartier diamond tennis bracelet. Last August, she also honored Diana by wearing her delicate butterfly earrings from the '80s. Markle wore the earrings during her visit to Colombia with husband Prince Harry, as reported by Page Six.
