After-Dark Sussex Drama: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Nanny Gets the Sack Following Secretive 'Nighttime Incident'
Shortly after Prince Archie's birth in May 2019, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle hired an additional nanny to look after the newborn royal as they balanced their royal engagements. According to Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in 2020's Finding Freedom, that decision turned out to be a mistake.
"They decided to hire a night nurse to establish a sleep schedule and be an extra pair of helping hands," the authors revealed.
"But their time with the couple was brief," they added. "Meghan and Harry were forced to let the nurse go in the middle of her second night for being unprofessional and irresponsible."
It has never been made clear exactly what it was Harry and Meghan or either one of them walked in on that led to the decision to fire the night nurse. This "incident in the night" has led some online detractors of the couple to suggest everything from infidelity on the Duke's part to possible neglect of Archie's needs.
No matter the reason, the new sacking led to the soon-to-be "Megxit" ready royal rebels to hire Lorren Khumalo, who spoke about her experiences working in the Sussex household in the waning days of their short-lived royal careers.
The pediatric nurse first started working for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shortly after Archie's birth in May 2019, back when both were working royals and living at Frogmore Cottage.
"I thought to myself, 'I wonder how their nannies look, do they wear heels?' Prince William has got a Norland Nanny, so they've got a brown uniform that for my skin color, and the way it looks in khaki brown, I knew it wouldn't even go, it would just not work," Khumalo revealed. "So [I thought] I'll wear something dark and nice kitten heels, but I'll look presentable for a royal so I need to do my best. But I didn't use any make-up, I said if they take me, they take me as I am."
She continued: "I wasn't born with a silver spoon, I'm not blue blood, I will go as I am, and trust me with my God, I'll get this job."
The nurse said she expected to see a "princely somebody, in those very expensive German, Swiss suits or something," but the Duke of Sussex was dressed down in a T-shirt and blue jeans, and His Royal Highness was also walking around the estate on his bare feet. "And I kept asking his PPO, so his protection officer, 'Do I curtsy, do I have to?' And he just looked at me and laughed and he said, 'You'll see, Prince Harry is amazing.'"
