Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are proud parents to two children, but before welcoming their daughter Princess Lilibet, Markle went through a heartbreaking miscarriage. In the latest episode of her podcast, Confessions Of A Female Founder, she opened up about the loss of her child. Speaking with guest Reshma Saujani, the Duchess shared how she had to ‘learn to detach’ after the painful experience.
In her candid conversation with Girls Who Code Founder, Sujani, Markle likened her miscarriage to letting go of a business. As reported by the Daily Mail, she said on her podcast, “I've spoken about the miscarriage that we experienced, and I think in some parallel way, you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for, and to be able to be okay at a certain point to let something go, something that you planned to love for a long time.” Sujani, who has been through multiple miscarriages herself, replied, “I feel like you're reading my diary, that's really insightful.”
Sujani, opening up, said that her miscarriages affected her both personally and professionally. She added, “Oftentimes, I was performing in front of these children that I desperately wanted. And I just got really good at that, but it was eating me up inside.” In response, Markle shared how much she loved being a mom and how she finds leaving them in another room difficult. She revealed that she tends to worry about their wellbeing and ‘scroll through pictures of them endlessly'. She spilled, "'My husband is like, 'My love, can you just give yourself a minute? Why don't you take a bath? Why don't you go work out?' I'm like, 'I know, but I just want a cuddle.'"
Markle, earlier, had also spoken about her miscarriage in an emotional op-ed published by The New York Times. In the article, she recalled a soul-crushing moment when she was changing Archie’s diaper and suddenly ‘felt a sharp cramp.’ She penned, “I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right. I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.” She also described watching her husband Prince Harry's heart break as he tried to hold the 'shattered pieces' of her while grieving for their unborn child.
Markle has also had a complicated pregnancy. In the debut episode of her podcast, she opened up to Bumble Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd about suffering from a ‘huge medical scare’ after childbirth. As reported by Metro UK, she said, “We both had very similar experiences — though we didn't know each other at the time — with postpartum, and we both had preeclampsia.” She added, “I think for many mothers, especially in the early postpartum period, there's this immense desire to keep going, to be there for everyone else.” While Markle revealed having postpartum preeclampsia, she did not reveal whether it occurred after the birth of Archie or Lilibet.
