Meghan Markle and Prince Harry first met in July 2016 and since then they have never looked back. The pair married in 2018 in a lavish royal wedding that looked straight out of a fairytale. In their Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, royal fans noticed a sweet detail—Markle’s text messages revealed her adorable nickname for Harry, ‘H’ and ‘Prince Haz.’
The pair revealed that the moniker ‘Prince Haz’ came from the same friend who had first set them up on their blind date in 2016. Markle's mother Doria Ragland, was also seen using the nickname for Prince Harry in the documentary.
Harry jokingly revealed that only his wife and their mutual friend could address him as ‘Prince Haz.’ As reported by The Mirror, he once playfully scolded comedian James Corden when he used the special name. During a 2021 interaction, Corden quipped, “Haz? I didn’t know we were calling you ‘Haz’ now,” to which Harry responded, “You are not my wife.” Meanwhile, the nickname ‘H’ is a simple abbreviation of the Duke's name. Markle doesn't only use cute nicknames. In a recent Instagram post, she also referred to herself with a more conventional ‘my love.’
Harry has also had other nicknames bestowed upon him. In his memoir Spare, he revealed that his brother, Prince William, called him ‘Harold.’ Meanwhile, according to the Daily Express, his mother Princess Diana called him ‘Good King Harry.’ Royal expert Charles Rae revealed that she believed “he would have been better equipped for the role as a future king.”
Funny monikers are in fact quite common in the royal family. For instance, Harry's grandfather Prince Philip, famously called his wife Queen Elizabeth II ‘cabbage,’ reportedly inspired by the French phrase ‘mon petit chou.’ The Duke of Edinburg also had one for Markle, albeit never to her face— ‘DoW', short for Duchess of Windsor, a reference to Wallis Simpson, who too was an American divorcee who married into the royal fold. Meanwhile, King Charles III gave a bizarre nickname to Markle—‘Tungsten’, because he believed she was tough and unbending, just like the metal. A royal source told the Daily Mail, “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy.”
As for Harry, he simply calls Markle 'Meg', short for Meghan. Interestingly, Meghan isn't her first name. Unbeknownst to many, her first name is actually Rachel—same as her screen name in the popular legal drama, Suits. Speaking of names and monikers, Markle recently updated royal watchers that she has a new surname—she has dropped 'Markle' for 'Sussex' in light of her new life and journey with Harry.
