Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had to meet each other’s families before tying the knot. Shortly after Harry proposed, the couple sat down for a BBC interview as an engaged couple. Harry shared what it was like for Markle to meet his brother and sister-in-law for the first time. Markle, who's had her share of tensions with the Princess, gave a one-word response when asked about Middleton.
Harry and Markle were chummy during the sit-down. In conversation with journalist Mishal Hussein, Harry drew back the curtain on Markle and Middleton’s first interaction. As reported by the Daily Express, he said, “William was longing to meet her and so was Catherine, so you know, being our neighbors, we managed to get that in a couple of—well quite a few times now and Catherine has been absolutely…” When her husband fell short of words to describe his sister-in-law, Markle chimed, “Wonderful.” She stressed that Harry's entire family was 'amazing'.
The Duchess also spoke about her first meeting with Middleton in her Netflix documentary, Harry and Meghan. She said that she first met Middleton for a dinner at Kensington Palace in 2017. As reported by Newsweek, she recounted, “When Will and Kate came over and I met her for the first time—they came over for dinner and I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot.” Noting the royal culture shock, she added, “It's like I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger...I didn't realize that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.”
Markle’s single-word response to meeting Middleton was in stark contrast to how she recounted her first meeting with the Queen. In the same BBC interview, she said, “To be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother, all of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her.”
While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex once spoke highly of their family, they later claimed otherwise. After stepping down from royal duties, they gave bombshell interviews detailing their strained relationship with the Prince and Princess of Wales. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle revealed that Middleton had made her cry just days before the wedding. She said, “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining to...flower girl dresses. And it made me cry.” The issue was reportedly over Princess Charlotte’s dress, which Middleton felt was 'too baggy'. Harry also addressed the tensions with his brother. He said he loves William 'to bits' but acknowledged their relationship is distant, adding, “Time heals all things, hopefully.”
