Although Prince Harry has been estranged from his family since he and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals in 2020, he was invited to attend his father, King Charles III's, coronation ceremony in 2023. Analyzing the clips from the event, lip reader Jeremy Freeman revealed that the Duke had uttered harsh words about his family, allegedly telling Princess Eugenie's husband that he was ‘fed up’ with them.
According to The Sun, Harry, who was seated next to Eugenie’s husband, Jack Brooksbank, ranted, “I’m fed up with the way they treat me. It’s not an ideal situation.” Brooksbank responded, “If I can make you feel any better, and even I can do it. It’s not the quiet life, is it?” Harry, fifth-in-line to the throne, shook his head before saying, “They don't care.”
Sources also told the outlet that the Duke was invited to a private Palace gathering after the coronation, but he allegedly refused. They added that most of the royal family allegedly 'breathed a sigh of relief.' But the King was 'genuinely quite disappointed that he didn’t stay.' While it's unclear who exactly Harry's blunt comments were directed at, it's believed they were about his immediate royal family. The Sun speculates that he may also have been referring to the British media amid his ongoing legal battles with the press. After the release of his controversial memoir, Spare, his comments may have also been directed toward his brother Prince William.
The King’s coronation wasn't the first event where Harry allegedly aired the dirty laundry about his family in public. Freeman told the Daily Star that he also picked up snide remarks passed between Harry and Markle towards William and Kate in past clips. This tense exchange allegedly came during the Commonwealth Day service, which was the couple’s last event as senior royals. After the 'Fab 4' awkwardly greeted each other, Freeman told the outlet that Harry said to his wife, “At least they acknowledged, unlike last time.” Markle flashed a gentle smile and nodded while William, who was sitting in the front row, told his wife, “That was executed well.”
Prince Harry was only in the UK for 24 hours for the coronation before he returned to California to celebrate his son’s birthday. As a non-working royal, he was without his military uniform and was seated in the third row with his cousins. His wife, Markle, didn't attend the ceremony and chose to be with her two kids in the US. As per reports, after his coronation, the King thanked everyone in return and raised a glass to his grandchildren. He also toasted to 'those that weren’t there' before poignantly wishing absent grandson Archie a very happy birthday. A source said, “It was apparently a very sweet moment.”
