Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior royals in 2020. Their last joint royal appearance was at the Commonwealth Day service on March 9 that year. The event was overwhelming for the pair, given their impending exit from royal life and the tension that ensued following the bombshell announcement. Now, a lip reader has come forward and revealed the Duke’s brutal remark to his wife during the event.
Harry and Meghan Markle attended the Commonwealth Day service alongside Prince William and Kate Middleton. According to the Daily Star, lip reader Jeremy Freeman noticed some snide remarks passed between the couples. After they awkwardly greeted each other, Freeman shared that Harry said to his wife, “At least they acknowledged, unlike last time.” Markle flashed a smile and nodded while William, who was sitting in the front row, told his wife, "That was executed well." Rumors of a rift between the ‘fab four’ were rampant at the time as they came together for the final time as senior royal members.
Royal expert Robert Lacey revealed in his book, Battle of the Brothers, that William had attempted to extend 'a small but sensitive gesture of peace' at Harry’s last public outing. According to the Daily Mail, he wrote that the Prince was reportedly 'furious' at being 'shunted aside on this final appearance'. William and Middleton stepped in to defuse the situation and offered to join ‘emotional’ Harry and Markle as they waited in their seats. Body language expert Judi James also revealed the tense environment between the couples during the event. She told the Daily Mail, “When Harry arrived, the minute he and Meghan had to drop hands, he immediately reached for his wedding ring, which is a self-comfort [sign]…his face otherwise was quite tense and unsmiling.”
Harry once also described the palpable tension in his Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan. He revealed that he was very nervous to see his family that day. "I felt really distant from the rest of my family, which was interesting because so much of how they operate is about what it looks like, rather than what it feels like.” He added, “It looked cold. But it also felt cold.”
Harry has also opened up about his acrimonious relationship with William in his memoir, Spare. According to The Guardian, William once called Markle 'difficult', 'rude', and 'abrasive' during a confrontation at Harry’s London home in 2019. Things soon escalated with Harry claiming that William grabbed him 'by the collar' and riped his 'necklace', and 'knocked' him to the floor. On another occasion, Harry, in his docuseries Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, shared that he and his brother were 'on different paths.' He explained, “We don't see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but you know, I love him dearly…as brothers, you know, you have good days, you have bad days.”
