'It's Time' for 'Queen' Kate: King Charles Urged to Install Princess of Wales as 'Lady of the Order of the Garter' Befitting Her Future Role
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is Britain's next Queen Consort, and according to Paul Burrell, former butler to her mother-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales, "it's time" for HRH to become a Lady of the Order of the Garter.
"I wonder why Kate hasn’t been made a Lady of the Order of the Garter when she is our future queen, which is out of kilter for me," the bestselling author said on behalf of Slingo. "I think it revolves around the King and his favorites."
"I wanted the King to invest Kate into the Order of the Garter, but he hasn’t done it," he added. "I'm hoping that the King will invest Kate in the most noble order. I'm hoping he's going to do that; if he does it, will make headlines, [and] she deserves it. She's our future queen, she's a Princess of Wales, it's time for her to become a Lady member of the Garter.”
Burrell further criticized His Majesty and stated: "The King showers the people around him who favor royal titles and gifts. He does it because he wants to be loved and reward them for their service to him and the country."
He then mentioned his late former boss by observing: "Diana, Princess of Wales, was married to Charles for 15 years before they divorced but never received one award from the royal family. Nothing for her contribution to society or the world. I have a problem with that because I think she should have been, but she was never celebrated in the way the King is celebrating his family."
King Edward III founded the Most Noble Order of the Garter in 1348, which has continued in an unbroken tradition ever since. It is one order of chivalry in Britain in which the reigning monarch personally makes the decision on who is included in the roster of knights and ladies. If selected, which is always the personal decision of the monarch and not the government, Catherine would be known as a Royal Lady of the Order of the Garter.
Her Royal Highness would join eight other women in the chivalry, including Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and Princess Alexandra. The King and Kate's husband, William, Princes of Wales, are also in the order.
Additionally, His Majesty may also appoint his daughter-in-law with the ability to grant royal warrants throughout the United Kingdom. Warrants are as old as the monarchy itself and are typically given by the reigning sovereign as well as any member of their family they also invest with the power. This is typically only the monarch's consort and heir, which would be the Queen and William, however, royal analysts predict Charles III may tap Kate as well at some point.
