Royal Plastic Panic! King Charles 'Shrieks' at Saran Wrap Leading Queen Camilla to Explain What the 'Common' Product Is to Baffled Monarch
Charles III may be King of the United Kingdom and Defender of the Faith... but His Majesty once "shrieked" when he first came across saran wrap over his dinner.
This led Queen Camilla to reassure and educate the "pampered sovereign" on the purpose of cling wrap, according to a passage in Tom Bower's 2018 book Rebel Prince.
The tome highlighted how the then-Prince of Wales was "disconnected" from the ordinary world well into his 60s and 70s.
The outspoken Charles III critic wrote, "He walked into the dining room and shrieked. Fearing the worst, Camilla dashed in after him. 'What’s this?' asked her husband, pointing at the food."
"It's cling film, darling," the then-Duchess of Cornwall replied.
For a man who also allegedly had aides squeezing toothpaste on his brush well into middle age, the revelation did not come as a surprise to many.
The monarch, now over two years into his reign, is still battling an unknown type of cancer. The ongoing illness made headlines recently thanks to His Majesty's alleged wish to stop his treatments while he tours Australia. Reports about the sovereign's diet also emerged, which saw the King having to modify his eating habits for the first time in years.
"With some reluctance, he now has something to eat at lunchtime — a snack, really," a source told a publication. "He now eats half an avocado to sustain him through the day. It's important, particularly if you have got an illness."
The King has long been open about eating a healthy, organic diet since his early adulthood. This assertion shocked many royal watchers when he received a cancer diagnosis due to his decades of nutritious eating and exercise. Charles III was even once rumored to only consume blended concoctions of pure vegetables and even edible grasses in the 1980s. The recipe reportedly made Diana, Princess of Wales, "sick to her stomach" watching him down the puree like a liquor shot.
As for Charles and Queen Camilla's first tour of Australia as King and Queen, the Buckingham Palace Press Office previously stated: "We've had to, as you would with any visit, think about how you can ensure their Majesty's energies are preserved to be at their best."
They added: "There had been some hope earlier in the year for their Majesties to be able to visit New Zealand. On the doctor’s advice, and in close consultation with the Australian and New Zealand governments, that wasn't able to take place. We've had to make some difficult decisions about the program with the Australian government, about where their Majesties can get to."
