King Charles and Prince Harry share a strained relationship following the latter’s exit from the royal fold. The King has largely kept mum, choosing not to air his dirty linen in public. During a royal event, when an enthusiastic fan asked him about Harry’s potential return to the UK, Charles in his response, kept it brief, offering a simple four-word comment.
In his controversial memoir, Spare, Prince Harry revealed that his father often prioritized his own interests before his. While Charles has his reasons to be mad, he chose not to ill-mouth his son during the royal event (a visit to the University of East London's Stratford campus for its 125th anniversary). As reported by the Daily Record, as the man shouted, “Bring back Harry, please, can you please bring him back please, Sir?”, Charles, who seemed heartbroken, nervously replied, “It would be nice”, before quickly moving on.
Page Six reports that Harry is willing to return to royal duties on one condition. A source close to Harry said, “I have a hard time believing that if his dad asks for his help, Harry would say no. I think he would try.” But the insider added, “I don't think it's something that Harry would ask [to do] on his own.” Meanwhile, The Times reported that Harry told friends he would step into a temporary royal role while Charles is unwell. A royal source told the outlet, “On all practical levels, it makes perfect sense for the family to come together to support the King while he's sick. Much has been said on both sides in recent years, but that has never diminished the fundamental bond of blood.”
Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024. His diagnosis came during an unrelated procedure for an enlarged prostate. As the news broke, royal watchers hoped that the King’s diagnosis could lead to a proper reconciliation between the father and son. However, things didn't change much between the two. Interestingly, The Mirror reported that during his visit to the UK for Invictus Games, Harry gestured towards the crowd and said, “Throughout all these families I see it on a day-to-day basis, the strength of the family unit coming together. I think any illness, any sickness brings families together.” Harry most likely wasn't just talking about veterans but also his own circumstances.
The Duke of Sussex later revealed to ABC News that he 'jumped on a plane' as soon as possible to see his father after he was diagnosed with cancer. He added, "Look, I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him, I’m grateful for that."
