Kate, Princess of Wales, and Denmark's Crown Princess Mary were once lovingly compared to one another by an influential fashion designer.

"Kate is like a younger sister to Mary, who is both beautiful and elegant," the late Karl Lagerfeld remarked shortly before Kate's 2011 wedding to Prince William.

"Crown Princess Mary’s signature style is very classic and sophisticated. She often goes for simple lines and streamlined silhouettes. She manages to balance Scandinavian minimalism with Australian bohemianism very well," royal fashion website UFO No More's founders Sarah Williams and Heaven LeeMiller dished.

They added: "Her outfits always have a touch of trend or whimsy to prevent them from looking dull or boring."

Both the future queens of Britain and Denmark have routinely been compared to one another ever since their royal weddings in 2011 and 2004, respectively. Both consorts are commoners who married future kings, and both support many of the same causes and initiatives.

Crown Princess Mary will likely get to experience queenship long before her British counterpart, as both she and Crown Prince Frederik are set to accede to the Danish throne on Sunday, January 14. In what came as a shock to royal watchers around the world, Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication for that date on New Year's Eve, despite previously stating that she would die in her role as Denmark's sovereign.

The British monarchy is still firmly rooted in "service for life" for its monarchs, which means Kate will not call herself Queen until the moment King Charles III passes away and William becomes king.

Frederik and Mary married in a lavish wedding in 2004 after a four-year romance. The future king of the Scandinavian nation first met Mary, an Australian advertising executive, during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Their desire to wed received the blessing of Denmark's monarch and Frederik's mother, Margrethe II, in 2003.

The pair went on to have four children together, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. Frederik will become the King of Denmark upon the death of Margrethe II, and Mary will become his Queen Consort.

Despite Margrethe II's abdication announcement, the "affair" rumors surrounding her soon-to-be successor are also making headlines in tandem with the abdication announcement.

"I categorically deny the statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederick and me," Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova told an outlet when denying she had an affair with the future king. "Any statement of this type not only completely lacks the truth but also misrepresents the facts in a malicious manner. This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the pertinent steps to protect my right to honor, truth, and privacy."
