The late Queen Elizabeth II was known for her diplomacy and discretion, steering clear of controversies. So when she allegedly took a brutal one-word swipe at Meghan Markle during a royal event at Balmoral Castle, it had "everybody's eyebrows hit the ceiling” as per an insider.

The relationship between the Queen and Markle reportedly soured when the Duchess stepped down as a senior royal and moved to the US, making also salacious revelations in a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey. This prompted a savage remark from the Queen during a 2022 drinks reception at Balmoral Castle. The monarch allegedly dubbed Markle as 'evil' in the presence of courtiers and attendees. Speaking to The Spectator, a source revealed, “It was out of character for the Queen to use such a word as 'evil' to describe Meghan, but she saw straight through her. It was a startling sentence to hear from the most forgiving woman on earth.”

The brutal jab was allegedly made one month before the Queen’s passing. Due to her declining health, she was reportedly not in a good state of mind. The source added, “At the drinks before the dinner, a small group were talking to the monarch and she explained that Harry meeting Meghan had become a complete catastrophe and described her as evil. By this point, we all knew the Queen's health was in decline and she had months left, she seemed regretful about how things had panned out.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the UK for the Queen's September 2022 funeral service to pay their respects.

While the Queen disliked Markle, she in turn had only nice things to say about the monarch. During her Winfrey interview, Markle sang praises for the Queen. She said, “The Queen has always been wonderful to me. I have loved being in her company.” She stressed that her warmth reminded her of her own grandmother. She also recalled the first time she met the Queen in July 2016, and shared, “I didn't fully understand what the job was… As Americans, what do you know about the royals?”

Commenting on the relationship the two shared, a source exclusively spoke to InTouch Weekly, “Because Meghan and Harry continued to shockingly defy the Queen’s wishes. Their relationship was irreparably strained when she passed.” Royal expert, Robert Hardman, also wrote in his book, The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy, that the monarch was deeply upset that the Sussexes chose to name their daughter Lilibet—a nickname exclusively hers, affectionately given to her in her childhood and later used husband, Prince Philip. Although the Queen congratulated the couple on their daughter’s birth in a statement, she wasn't happy with the name.
