Prince Harry and his sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, once shared a close bond. After Harry’s exit from the royal family and subsequent bombshell claims in interviews and his memoir, Spare, the two are reportedly not on good terms. However, that did not stop the Prince from reaching out after Middleton made a return to public life following her cancer diagnosis. An insider claims Harry sent her a message of goodwill and expressed how delighted he was to see her out again.
The Princess of Wales attended the men's singles finals at Wimbledon on July 14, 2024. The event marked her first solo appearance following her diagnosis. As reported by OK! magazine, the insider revealed, “Harry was watching Wimbledon and was thrilled to see Kate looking so radiant. He sent her a note to congratulate her and let her know how happy he was to see her out.” The source added, “He's just so grateful that she's on the mend and able to get back to her duties after taking time off, as is Meghan.” The outlet reports that Middleton was greeted with cheers and a standing ovation from the crowd at Wimbledon.
The source further claimed that Harry was 'convinced’ it was the perfect opportunity to ‘try and repair’ his relationship with Middleton and his brother, Prince William. They continued, “Even though it's an awkward situation for all of them, they both thought the sooner they could put this all behind them, the better…he genuinely thought that by now they'd have found a way to reconcile, and he hates to think of it continuing.” The insider added that Harry is ‘willing to accept’ that his close relationship with his family may never be fixed, but still carries a hope for a reunion.
Harry previously had publicly referred to Middleton as the ‘sister in law he always wanted.’ Unfortunately, their close bond deteriorated following his relocation to California with Meghan Markle and his two children. Royal expert Katie Nicoll notes that his cruel remarks about Middleton in Spare led to a complete breakdown of their relationship. She told The Sun, “She tried to get the brothers back on an even keel, and for Kate to be dragged into this mucky saga was upsetting for her and certainly did infuriate William.” In his memoir, Harry penned some damaging accusations against Middleton. He detailed an incident where she once made Markle cry, and how she influenced him to wear the infamous Nazi costume in public.
While the Princess of Wales is said to be deeply hurt by her brother-in-law's behavior, she also harbors a soft spot for him. As per Marie Claire, a royal source revealed that she, too, reached out to Harry on his 40th birthday, hoping to restore ‘peace’ within the family. The insider added, “She doesn't believe it's right to just give up on Harry. She's worried for him because she sees all the signs of how homesick and vulnerable he is.”
