Despite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle being extremely picky when it comes to their kids, one person has won their trust in terms of caring for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. A source shared that the couple only feels that their kids are safe in the care of Markle's mother, Doria Ragland, as she is particular about good family values.

Whenever the couple has traveled outside of the US, their children stayed in California under the care of Ragland. As reported by the Daily Express, the source said, "Meghan feels much more comfortable with the children under her mother’s watchful eye, and Harry was very keen to keep it [childcare] in the family. Both Harry and Meghan are extremely protective of their children and only stop worrying about them if Doria is in charge whenever they are away." The person added, "Doria was instrumental in looking after Archie and Lilibet when they [Harry and Meghan] were in Nigeria, and she treats them like they are her own."

The source further revealed, "Doria spends nearly all of her time with Harry and Meghan. It’s basically a family of five. She is amazingly close to the children and helps Meghan daily. She also steps in as a nanny." Harry and Markle reportedly believe their children must be raised by family, not by nannies or outside caregivers. Recently, when they traveled to Canada for the 2025 Invictus Games, Archie and Lilibet stayed with Ragland. However, just days into the tournament, Markle chose to return home to be with her kids, as reported by the Daily Express.

The Sussexes' journey as parents began with the arrival of their son, Archie, on May 6, 2019, followed by their daughter, Lilibet, two years later, on June 4, 2021. As their roles within the royal family shifted after their departure in 2020, they made a conscious decision to give their children as normal a childhood as possible. This included being cautious about sharing photos of Archie and Lilibet on social media. However, recently in 2025, as Markle returned to Instagram after a 5-year hiatus, she has shared numerous glimpses of her children while promoting her new lifestyle brand, As Ever, and her new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, as reported by People Magazine. The stark shift has upset many who have dubbed Markle a hypocrite, and accused her of using her children as pawns.

In February, Markle shared a peek at the thoughtful gifts she brought back for Archie and Lilibet from her trip to Canada for the Invictus Games. The goodies included personalized jerseys with monograms for the kids, chocolates, and even Timbits and mini donuts. In another sweet moment, just before the premiere of her Netflix show on March 4, the Duchess shared the adorable bouquet she received signed by Harry and their kids. The message read, "Congratulations, mumma! We love your show, and we love you!”
