The late Queen Elizabeth II dearly loved her pet corgis, so much so, that the Palace’s pristine lawns were reserved as her dog-walking haven when not put to use for royal parties. Naturally, she was hence less than pleased when US President Donald Trump insisted on flying his helicopter into Buckingham Palace not once but twice in one day. An insider revealed that this caused permanent damage to the Queens Palace lawns.
As reported by the Sunday Times, when Trump visited the Queen for the 75th anniversary of D-Day in 2019, his Marine One helicopter left scorch marks and craters on the palace lawns. This reportedly had the Queen ranting about the same to Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister. A source close to Morrison said, “He had got off the plane and went straight to the palace to see the Queen, who led him out to the gardens and said, ‘Come and look at my lawn. It’s ruined.'” Morrison himself had also traveled to the UK for the 75th D-Day commemorations.
As per the outlet, the Queen rejected a request from US security services for six helicopters to land at Windsor Castle. She also insisted on fewer helicopters to protect her lawns, when Barrack Obama visited. Trump’s security was oblivious to the Queen’s love for her lawns and failed to get the memo. His team used a helicopter for the three-mile journey to the palace from Winfield House in Regent’s Park.
While the Queen disliked the US leader, Trump has been steadfast in singing praises for the Queen. In an interview, he once said, “I have such a great relationship, and we were laughing and having fun…Her people said she hadn't had so much fun in 25 years. Then I got criticized for it because they said we were having too much fun.” While Trump bragged about her enjoying his company, the Queen's friend, Monty Roberts claimed that the monarch found Trump to be ‘rude.’ “She particularly disliked the way he couldn't stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting,” Brown said, as per the Daily Mail.
The late Queen’s feelings toward Trump were also reflected in another incident. One of her many talents included mimicry and faking accents. Her cheeky sense of humor got the best of her when she allegedly imitated First Lady Melania. As reported by the DailyMail, royal commentator Ephraim Hardcastle revealed that the Queen pitying Melania went silent, put on a bored face, and eventually blurted out, 'I want to be alone' in her impersonation— alluding that the FLOTUS gets annoyed in her husband's company.
