After stepping down as a senior royal and moving to the US, Prince Harry publicly released a series of text messages exchanged between Kate Middleton and his wife, Meghan Markle. The awkward messages provided a rare look into the duchesses' stressed relationship. The text messages, outlined in Harry's memoir, Spare, addressed the highly publicized spat between Markle and Middleton over bridesmaid dresses— specifically, Princess Charlotte’s outfit for the Sussexes’ grand wedding.
For years, media reports claimed that Markle made Middleton cry during an argument over Charlotte’s dress. However, in her bombshell 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle shared her version of events, revealing that it was she who was left in tears, as reported by the Irish Star. In Spare, Harry shared that Middleton texted the bride-to-be four days before the wedding, saying the dresses had to be fixed. But Markle didn’t reply right away as she was very busy with wedding preparations and also had her father’s heart surgery on her mind.
Middleton reportedly wrote to Markle, "Charlotte's dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on at home." To this, Markle replied, “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8 a.m. Here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?” However, Middleton did not agree with Markle’s suggestion and said, “No, all the dresses need to be remade.” She also claimed to have discussed the bridesmaid dress issue with her wedding designer, who allegedly suggested the same thing.
As reported by Page Six, Harry further recalled, “Meg asked if Kate was aware of what was going on right now. With her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the dresses and the wedding are in four days!” He added, “[Middleton] had problems with the way Meg was planning her wedding. Something about a party for the page boys? It went back and forth.” In her last text to Middleton, Markle reportedly wrote, “I’m not sure what else to say. If the dress doesn’t fit, then please take Charlotte to see Ajay. He’s been waiting all day.” To this, Middleton allegedly just responded with a “Fine.”
Harry shared that he came home and found Markle crying on the floor. However, the next day, Middleton brought flowers and a card to apologize for the misunderstanding. This was also confirmed by Markle in her Oprah interview. Although things are now strained, when Harry and Markle got engaged, the two women were often seen together at royal events, smiling and enjoying each other's company. At the time, the media nicknamed Prince William, Middleton, Harry, and Markle as the 'Fab Four' as they seemed to be very close, as reported by Newsweek.
