Prince William has allegedly always been wary of his stepmother, Queen Camilla. It is widely reported that he was hurt by Camilla’s affair with his father, then-Prince Charles, which led to the breakdown of his parents' marriage. Royal expert Christopher Anderson believes that William merely ‘tolerates’ his stepmother, who has been ‘a little afraid’ of him. He also revealed William's plans for Camilla in the family once he becomes King.
As reported by Comopolitan, Anderson claimed that Camilla’s ‘role in the monarchy may be reevaluated,’ but she'll probably still partake in some royal engagements here and there. Anderson told Us Weekly that William and Prince Harry ‘put on a good front’ publicly, but they weren't 'happy with Camilla stepping in'. Another source also told the outlet, “William and Harry had always distrusted Camilla and felt resentment toward her because of their devotion to their mother. They never felt comfortable opening up to her in any real way.”
Despite their acrimonious relationship, Anderson argues that Kate Middleton and Charles’ battle with cancer gave William a bit more perspective. He added, “Camilla and Charles get on so well and laugh all the time…That’s what William likes about Camilla — she warms his father up and brings out his human side.” The expert believes that Charles’s illness has put the Queen Consort’s devotion to her husband more in focus, which is greatly appreciated by William. One of Camilla’s family friends also told Us Weekly that ‘William has warmed up' to his stepmother over time, adding that they share ‘a familial relationship these days.’ However, an insider revealed that Camilla wants Charles to 'hold onto the reins for as long as possible,' as she 'loves her responsibilities,' and wanted to be Queen her 'her whole life', and hence 'doesn’t want to let it go so fast.'
USA Today reports that after William takes the throne, he will be the primary decision maker for the Firm. Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty Magazine, told the outlet, “The new King William would call all the shots, it would be down to him—in accordance with his father’s and stepmother’s wishes, of course. But every aspect of her public and private life would be reviewed.” However, Little mentioned that as per the royal protocol, Camilla would still be able to hold on to her royal title. He adds, “Queen Consort Camilla would still keep that title, much like the Queen Mother (the late Queen Elizabeth II’s mother) kept that title until she passed at age 101.”
As reported by Time Magazine, Harry also opened up about William and Camilla's tense relationship in his memoir, Spare. He claimed that William "long harbored suspicions about the other woman." He revealed that he and his brother pleaded with their father not to marry Camilla. He wrote, “Despite Willy and me urging him not to, Pa was going ahead. We pumped his hand, wished him well.” The brothers also reportedly saw Camilla as a 'wicked stepmother’ and a ‘villain.’
