Meghan Markle, having stepped away from the royal family in 2020, is now free to promote her business ventures, appear on TV, and share her life on social media. But during her time as a senior royal, things were very different. Royal expert Neil Sean claims that Markle, frustrated, once penned a letter to King Charles over the ‘different rules’ she was expected to follow compared to other family members.

Whether it was the explosive Oprah interview or her Netflix docuseries, Markle has criticized the royal family’s treatment of her. As reported by The Irish Star, Sean claimed, “She tried to set up a meeting with him, she sent him a letter and wanted a one-to-one to explain exactly the problems she's encountered ever since becoming a member of the British monarchy.” He added, “Meghan is really riled up that Fergie appears on shows like ITV's This Morning and Loose Women, promoting herself as the Duchess of York, selling books, and potentially doing adverts all under the Royal Family banner. Meghan and Harry seemingly can't comprehend why the rules are different for her.”

Sean also alleged that this wasn't her first letter of confrontation to the King. As per the Daily Mail, in a separate YouTube video, Sean claimed he heard from ‘a very good source’ that Markle wanted to ‘clear the air’ with her father-in-law. He said, “It would be an opportunity to clear the air, pull the rights from wrongs and explain some of the rationale behind what they've been doing over the last two years.” He, however, noted that it was customary for family members to request the King’s presence through a letter.

Markle and Charles reportedly had a close bond during her time in the royal fold. The Duchess and King were also unlikely allies against one royal protocol. Royal author Tom Quinn's book, Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family, quotes a source who claimed the concerned “Kensington Palace royals [having] to announce in advance when they are leaving the Palace and where they are going.” The insider claimed that Markle thought that the rule was 'silly' and Charles felt the same. “I think Charles agreed with Meghan on many points. He thought much of the protocol was silly, but it is hard to change,” the insider explained.

The Duchess of Sussex has not held her tongue while speaking against stringent royal protocols. She famously told Oprah, “When I joined that family, that was the last time, until we came here, that I saw my passport, my driver's license, my keys. All that gets turned over.”
