Prince Harry was reportedly angry after his wife, Meghan Markle, made a joke about meeting the late Queen Elizabeth. Harry allegedly found the joke inappropriate, given the respect he held for his grandmother. The incident was captured on tape in Harry & Meghan, the couple’s 2022 Netflix documentary, as they reflected on their lives as a married couple in the royal fold. When the subject of Markle’s first meeting with the Queen came up, she reenacted an overly dramatic version of her first curtsy, which allegedly angered Harry, according to a body language expert.
As reported by The Mirror, during the show, Harry asked, "How do you explain that to people? How do you explain that you bow to your grandmother? And that you will need to curtsy...especially to an American. That's weird." In response, Markle said, "It's surreal. It wasn't like some big moment of like, 'Now you're going to meet my grandmother.' I didn't know I was going to meet her until moments before." She added, "And I remember we were in the car and we were driving up and he's like, 'You know how to curtsy, right?' And I just thought it was a joke."
Markle playfully acted out a curtsy, saying, "Pleasure to meet you, Your Majesty," as the camera panned to capture Harry's reaction, who appeared visibly annoyed. Reflecting on the same, body language expert, Jesus Enrique Rosas, opined, "The first part of Harry's reaction tells me that he knew what was coming. He is serious even if Meghan is speaking quickly, joyfully, but there's no connection, no empathy in him. He is serious and maybe even angry. Notice what happens with his throat; he is swallowing at that moment." The expert added, "He is looking at Meghan, and he displays contempt. A split second after that, he looks away and presses his jaw."
As reported by the Daily Record, Rosas continued, "You can see the patches of red on his face are much redder. The cheeks, the bridge of the nose, the temples...it could be that he feels ashamed or angry." Rosas stressed that Harry wasn’t embarrassed rather pissed. If he had been ashamed, he might have forced a smile or let out a nervous laugh. Before their deaths, Harry was close to both his grandmother, the Queen, and his grandfather, Prince Philip. He frequently complimented them on their leadership and sense of humor, as reported by Business Insider.
In 2016, Harry took the stage at Buckingham Palace for The Queen’s Young Leaders Awards, delivering a heartfelt tribute to his grandmother. He reflected on all the special people he had met over the years, but emphasized that no one could match the aura of his 'Granny'. He claimed that the entire country and every member of the royal family looked at her as a source of inspiration and wisdom. Queen Elizabeth took on the weight of leadership at a very young age and set the example with her unwavering dedication and service. Harry deeply admired and respected her, which explains why Markle upset him.
