Before marrying Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's claim to fame came with the legal drama series Suits. As the two prepared to tie the knot, her affinity with the royal family reportedly demanded she make certain compromises as she played Rachel Zane in the series. One of them was a ban on taking photos in a ‘wedding’ dress for the final episode. Royal author Tom Bower claimed that the Palace enforced these restrictions to protect its image.

Markle played Rachel on Suits from 2011 to 2018 before retiring to move to the UK and serve the Crown. Bower, in his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors, revealed that the Palace pre-approved her scripts through her agent. As reported by The Sun, he wrote, “Fearing the worst, from bitter experience, the Palace stepped in to control Meghan’s life. Aaron Korsh was told to submit all future 'Suits' scripts to Nick Collins, Meghan’s agent…Scripts were thereafter forwarded to Kensington Palace for approval.”

Bower, who reportedly connected with 80 individuals who knew Harry and Markle personally, penned, “The most important demand concerned Meghan’s last scene at her ‘wedding’ to Mike. No photographs, the Palace ordered, were to be shot of Meghan wearing a wedding dress. Between filming, she was always to wear a jacket over the dress.” The wedding in question was Markle’s character Rachel, getting hitched to her love interest played by Patrick J. Adams. Her reputation on the set of Suits allegedly took a nosedive after her relationship with Harry went public. “Sometimes she arrived late and her empathy occasionally morphed into near-arrogance,” the author added.

However, Markle was beloved by fans for her standout role in Suits. Even before her ties to royalty, she already had her die-hard fans in the family. In his memoir, Spare, Harry revealed that Prince William and Kate Middleton were huge fans of her character. According to Page Six, William was flabbergasted when he learned his younger brother was dating his favorite actress. Harry wrote in his memoir, “All this time I’d thought Willy and Kate might not welcome Meg into the family…Now I had to worry about them hounding her for an autograph.”

Coming back to Suits, creator Aaron Korsh revealed that the Palace did give their suggestions on parts of Markle’s scripts. He recalled a specific instance where they interfered with her character’s dialogue, enforcing a line change to prevent her from saying ‘poppycock.’ “They didn't want to put the word poppycock in her mouth. I presume because they didn't want people cutting things together of her saying c*ck,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. However, he noted that their input on her scripts was minimal.
