When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry, she had to work on gaining the acceptance of his family as an American actress and divorcee. One unexpected bond she formed within the royal fold was with Harry’s stepmother, Queen Consort Camilla. Royal biographer Andrew Morton recounts an incident when Camilla showed ‘genuine affection’ towards Markle.
Morton, in his book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, claimed that Camilla proudly introduced newly married Markle during a garden party for the then-Prince Charles’s 70th birthday. As reported by The Mirror, he penned, “On 22 May 2018, when the Duchess of Cornwall, the future Queen Consort, held the hand of the new Duchess of Sussex during a garden party…this rare royal gesture was a sign of how quickly the American actor had been accepted and treated with genuine affection.” He added, “On that day, Camilla...who had previously advised Kate Middleton on the finer points of protocol during her royal apprenticeship, was, without saying a word, signaling to the watching world that Meghan was now ‘one of us.'”
Anderson also alleges that the Queen Consort broke royal protocol and held hands and kissed Markle goodbye during Charles’s birthday celebration. His claims were echoed by a royal source. In 2018, a close family friend told Vanity Fair that Markle and Camilla got along like ‘aces.’ They continued, “They clearly really like each other. There is real warmth and support. Camilla has been very helpful to Meghan.” Like Markle, Camilla was also a divorcee and had been through her fair share of backlash over her affair with Charles, which led to the dissolution of his marriage to Princess Diana.
Newsweek reports that after Harry and Markle's engagement, Camilla was ‘absolutely delighted’ for the couple. As per the outlet, she said, “As you can see, they're so happy, and sometimes, you know, in a climate where we're surrounded by a lot of bad news, it's a real joy to have a bit of good news for once.” Harry’s memoir, Spare, also mentioned that his wife relied on Camilla to deal with negative reporting from the press. He penned, “Meg...reached out to Camilla, who tried to counsel her by saying this was just what the press always did to newcomers, that it would all pass in due time.”
While Markle and Camilla got along well in the beginning, things soon soured after Markle left the family behind. Royal author Tom Bower also once claimed that Camilla called Markle a 'minx' behind her back. In his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, he revealed that the Queen Consort strongly believed Markle was a “self-seeking trouble-maker whose antics will always end in tears.”
