Before her royal wedding, Meghan Markle reportedly was scolded by Queen Elizabeth. The late Queen was allegedly furious at Markle over a gross mistake and made sure to remind her of royal etiquette. The alleged incident occurred at Windsor Castle in May 2018 at a pre-wedding food-tasting session when Markle was trying out food options for her reception. The Queen reportedly overheard Markle arguing about a certain choice.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl, in her book The New Royals, revealed that Markle was unhappy with one of the vegan dishes she tried. As reported by OK! Magazine, Nicholl claimed that a palace insider had spilled, "Meghan was at the castle to taste some of the dishes, and told one of the caterers she could taste egg. She got quite upset, saying that the dish was meant to be vegan and macrobiotic, when suddenly the Queen walked in and said, 'Meghan, in this family we don't speak to people like that.'" Less than two years after their grand wedding, the couple decided to move to the US and step away from their royal duties.

Interestingly, during a joint interview with Prince Harry during their engagement announcement in 2017, when Markle was asked about her relationship with the Queen, she referred to her as an incredible woman. She said, "When I met her, I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her." Even during her and Harry’s controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey, Markle emphasized that the Queen had always treated her with compassion.

As reported by Newsweek, recounting an incident from her first solo meeting with the late monarch, Markle said, "We were in the car going between engagements, and she has a blanket that sits across her knees for warmth, and it was chilly, and she was like, 'Meghan, come on' and she put it over my knees as well. It made me think of my grandmother, who has always been warm and inviting." However, as per reports, behind the scenes there were several conflicts. One such disagreement was over Markle’s wedding tiara.

Royal biographer Robert Lacey claimed that Harry once said, “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets!” However, the late Queen responded, "Meghan cannot have whatever she wants. She gets the tiara that she is given by me." However, Harry rejected these allegations in his memoir and clarified that he never said the remark, as reported by the Daily Express. The Queen’s reaction to Markle's first child Archie’s birth was also notably cold, as she referred to him simply as her eighth great-grandchild, omitting any mention of her or Harry.
