Princess Kate Middleton was reportedly 'devastated' after Meghan Markle made harsh comments about her daughter, Princess Charlotte. In his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors, author Tom Bower revealed that the Duchess allegedly compared Charlotte to Ivy, the daughter of her former best friend Jessica Mulroney.
Bower explained that Charlotte was one of the flower girls at Prince Harry and Markle's royal wedding. She was joined by Markle’s goddaughters Rylan and Remi Litt, Ivy, and Harry’s goddaughters Zalie Warren and Florence van Cutsem, as reported by The Mirror. Middleton, Bower claims, was 'tired' and emotional at the time, after the birth of Prince Louis, who was born just a few weeks before Harry and Markle’s wedding. As reported by OK! magazine, Middleton, hence didn't want to argue with Markle about the bridesmaids’ wearing tights as per royal protocol. Markle was, however, sure she didn’t want them to wear any, and her best friend Mulroney agreed. According to Bower's book, Middleton thought Charlotte’s dress was too short, and she was upset that Markle wouldn’t agree to a compromise.
A palace insider said, "What happened was that the dress itself did not fit Kate's then nearly three-year-old daughter... Kate had only just given birth to her third child, Prince Louis, and was feeling quite emotional." After her royal exit, Markle opened up about this very incident during her infamous Oprah Winfrey interview. As reported by the Irish Star, she said, "She [Kate] was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized. And she bought me flowers. A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining...about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it hurt my feelings.”
Markle continued, "I thought, in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding, that it didn't make sense to not be just doing whatever everyone else was doing, which was trying to be supportive, knowing what was going on with my dad and what not. It wasn't a confrontation, and I think it's...I don't think it's fair to her to get into the details of that because she apologized." In his memoir Spare, Harry added fuel to the fire by detailing how Markle got a message from Middleton about an alteration to the dresses.
According to him, Middleton allegedly messaged, "Charlotte's dress is too big, too long, too baggy." Their conversation ended with Markle suggesting to Middleton to take Charlotte to see Ajay, the tailor, if the dress didn't fit. In response, Middleton just said, "Fine." Later, when Harry came home, he allegedly found Markle sitting on the floor, sobbing.
